Adventures in baby-sling making

In my effort to pass away the time NOT thinking of being pregnant, I decided to make a baby sling. Now, I haven't played around with my sewing machine in three years, so DH and I were trying to figure it out. Fortunately, the majority came back to me. Anyway, I got the pattern off the internet, bought the fabric, cut as ordered, FINALLY figured out what a "french seam" was (DH did, actually)... and then, with the nearly-finished product, looked at it and said, "how does this thing work?"

Then I got inspired! I'll just try it out with the CAT....

Jiji is only 9 months old, but is already at 13lbs. Also, he has been DYING to go outside with the dogs for a walk but doesn't do well on his leash. So I put the sling on, had DH pick up the cat, and in he went, cradled like a newborn, with just his head poking out. Instantly, the pouch made sense, and to our surprise, the cat didn't move. He looked up at me with eyes that said, "what is going on?" I scratched his neck, and he started purring.

The next test was to walk with the "cat-sling" and then outside... and it worked! He fussed a bit when a car drove by, but I was able to contain him and keep him from scratching me.

It was just SO COOL. I'm sure if anyone had seen us, they would have thought we were ridiculous... man with two dogs and very pregnant woman carrying a black cat like a baby. Good thing it was dark.

this soooo sounds like something that DH and I would do (if I could sew that is...) What an awesome story!

That would have been a cute picture! We have a very neurotic 7 pound dog. I have been known to carry him around in the sling. We call him the AP dog. My friends laugh at us!!! Sometimes when he really wants to go for a walk, but is too tired to keep up (he's getting old and he has physical problems) - he gets a ride in the sling.

Ok, I had to finish the sling before I could take pictures! I was amazed how easy it was to get the cat in the sling this time. He wasn't too keen on it, but got distracted by the camera.

And here's the URL for the sling pattern:

I love it! We have two pouch slings and we were joking about trying it out with one of the cats just for fun. Maybe we can do it tonight...

Haha!! What a great idea! Your cat must be so laid back. I don't think I'd be able to get away with something like that with one of ours without some scars.
