I'm glad to see that I'm not crazy for not "following doctors orders"
Chrissy, I did not think about it.. but....

I know that many many many dentist will NOT touch an adult (much less a baby) when there is an infection present, they give you anti-biotics send you on your way and tell you to come back in two weeks when the anti is all gone, then they will do dental work.

I am so upset for you and what you have to go through!!!

You are an awsome mama (told you this before).

If it were my baby, and insurance limited my choice of care providers, I'd go with the longer drive to have the teeth extracted under general anesthesia. If going through the ER can get the work done faster, I'd probably give that a try.

Hi everyone.

I am posting for a gf of mine (MDC and IRL friend). She has a 12 month old baby that need serious dental work.

-baby has rotted teeth, teeth came in rotted. (family history of bad teeth)

-EBF for the past 12 months. (cares not to eat people food)

-On medicaid

-baby has had swollen upper lip that I believe was an infection from his teeth (treated with homeopathic)

She took him to the dentist months ago and he told her to stop night nursing that was what was causing her babys teeth to 'grow in rotted'. :

Again went to the same dentist last week... babys teeth are so bad that the front ones are rotted to the gums.

I have seen this mama try to nurse and it broke my heart. She cringes when he latches on due to the pain he inflicts on the nipple with his jagged teeth.
She did not tell the dentist that the baby is EBF (I told her it would not be a good idea considering that the asshat told her to stop night nursing and that was why his teeth were growing in bad).

The dentist told her the babys teeth were so bad cause she lets him walk around with a cup of juice all day long... asshat again... she does not! Boobie baby 100%

She has an appointment to take the baby back and have 4 of his front teeth pulled.
Before anyone tries to go on and on about not pulling them.. it is to the point they NEED to be pulled. This baby does not have any intrest in food...not that is a bad thing, or something to worry over...
I have had bad teeth and I know how hard it is and how much it hurts to eat food.
Nice warm milk from the tap is his choice of foods.

Anyway, this dentist wants mom to sign a waver saying she is okay with and understands that they will be 'restraining' the baby.. STRAPING HIM DOWN TO THE CHAIR.. keep in mind he is 12 months old!!!
They will not use general but only use 'laughing gas' and a local shot to numb him.

When she told me this, I about puked!!!
Strap this baby down and force him to be held down while he has 4 teeth pulled:

Other choice she has is to take her son 6 hours north of us to the hosp in Gainsville and have them extracted at the ER under a general.

Her delima... allow baby to be straped down, laughed up, shot up, and pulled.. worried about him remembering this...

or...

Take him to Gainsville to have them extracted while he is asleep.

Feedback is something this mama needs.. NO FLAMING OF ANY SORT PLEASE!:

This is a hard decision she has to make for her baby. And she needs support!!!
I dont know where you are at in FL but i am in the Orlando area and my childrens dentist is awesome ... they support BFing and EBF'ing ... i dont know if it would be possible to get him in but i would at the very least get a 2nd opinion on how to gently remove these teeth since that is what sounds necessary ... good luck ..

OMFG, Chrissy, I am going to get on the phone tomorrow for you (after I get 'C' school BS taken care of) and call every single dentist in the phone book and see if there is a single one that will take him pro-bono.. there has to be SOMEONE OUT THERE!!!

Hi. I have exp something similar with my dd of 17 mo. I know all about nursing with jagged teeth - ouch! My dd had a swollen lip after hitting her mouth on a table edge when she was 11 mo she already had 4 top teeth and none appeared damaged - no bleeding. At 14 months I noticed a chip on one lateral incisor and yellowish stains on the back of 3 teeth. I had my dentist take a look and he told me it was just a chip and some staining ( from what?! she was almost EBF and eating nothing that would stain). The other LI started to chip and she seemed to be in pain when she bit down on solids - she was mostly nursing and eating very small pieces of food. I went to see a ped dentist in my area. The appt was almost a month away and by that time all 4 front teeth were chipped. I got the whole anti-breastfeeding-time-to-wean speech and was told dd had to have 1 tooth extracted because decay had reached nerve and the others capped - strapped to papoose with ONLY an injection to numb!!! No way.
I spoke to someone who had to have all 4 teeth extracted on all 3 kids and one dentist had let her hold her child (this had been about 6-7 yrs ago). I spoke to this dentist, but he insisted I see a pediodontist and referred one 4 hours away from me. He examined her and said teeth could be saved and procedure could be done under sedation with memory-suppressant (chloral hydrate and atarax - sp?).
1.5 wks later, (last week) she had the procedure done. She had the sedative at 9 am, procedure at 10, and they were finished by 10:45. Because so much of the teeth were missing, they had to use stainless steel on 3 of them and do a nerve trtmnt on 1( I had been told & was expecting resin, but they informed me during the procedure). Afterwards, she was awake but groggy, fell asleep in my arms and slept for about 2 hours in the carseat on the way home. She nursed at 1 pm without a problem and didn't have any nausea or complaints - just slept until about 4 pm and woke up to nurse again. When we got home she had to be watched closely while she played for about 1.5 hrs because she didn't quite have her balance. She has been herself and happy and has been eating more solids now that she can bite down. I, too, was beside myself and very afraid of the whole thing - especially of trauma and the sedative. She has let me brush her teeth and is not behaving any differently, so I think (and hope!) that she has no memory of it. Seeing how much more she is eating now, I think we made the right decision.
I would suggest talking to more than one specialist. Let me know if any questions.

OMG that sounds so horrible. under no circumstances would i allow that dentist to touch one of my sons again. what a horrible "option" for you.
i know geneneral anesth. is not the greatest, and there really are dangers to it, but my ds2 had several surgeries when he was 2 and survived it. and he has many issues with G.A. and had to have special precautions, so im a little more than aware of the issues of G.A.

there is a great dentist on here somewhere. i wish i remembered her name. she helped me so much when i had a rootcanal earlier this year. i will try to find her name for you, but i cleaned out my pm before the server changed over and deleted all my pm's so i don't think its there. hopefully she will see this thread soon.

to you mama. i can't imagine having to go through that. so sorry for your little boy.
btw, my ds2 had heart surgery and was on medication that discolored some of his teeth and i know thats hard to deal with. i hope you get your son's issues resolved soon.

My ds recently had some cavities filled. They used laughing gas on him, gave him the shot, and then, put this blanket thing over his body to prevent him from using his arms. We couldn't go in, but watched through the window. It really was no big deal. Of course, my ds is 5, and his dental work was pretty minimal, but he remembers absolutely none of it and has no fear of his dentist (they are a children's dentist and really go out of their way to pamper the kids). If you end up going this route, try not to be too worried. It really should be okay. My only concern for him would be the after pain

I'm sorry you're dealing with this mama

I know he needs them pulled asap.
They are truely to the gum. I made the appt with them when they werent nearly as bad but it takes over a month to be seen.

mommaToThree, I had not seen before my post that crowning is not an option here. My dd had GA for surgery at Miami Children's Hospital when she was 2 days old / 5 lbs. Everything went well - They are awesome! They also have lodging for out-of-town parents nearby. Is going to their ER an option? The dentist that saw my dd last week is in Palm Beach - PM me if you need details.

I am so sorry you and your son have to go through this.

2 thoughts - one, try looking into Dr. Francis DuCoin in Stuart, FL. He was my dh's dentist as a child and then into young adulthood. They did his wisdon tooth extraction in the office under twilight anaesthesia (aka "conscious sedation" - it is the middle ground between being all the way under general anaesthesia and being strapped with nitrous and locals given - I just don't know if they can do that in an office setting for a little on that young). He may be in a place in his career that he is willing to do some pro bono work for special cases. He is a very, very nice man and if there was anyone willing to help, it would be him.

Second, what hospital in Gainesville were you going to have to go to? If it is Shand's, then I would really just up and go there. The care there is excellent and they have special protocols for children and babies. They most likely be able to do conscious sedation as an option, also - insist if you look into it and that is what you really want. I am a nurse who used to work at a hospital in Gainesville, and really, if I had a situation like this, I would take my baby to Shand's in a heartbeat. If it's not Shand's, lmk and I can give you some insight if need be.

Just some food for thought, and hopefully just giving you another option here. Hugs and hope you and your little guy are better soon.

ps - I wouldn't go back to that dentist. I think that kind of a procedure on a small one would be pretty traumatic. How could they really tell if he was crying in pain or in fear, kwim? (this is coming from a person who had 16 extractions from age 4-16 - it's not bad if the local is in just right - if not...well, just how couod they tell?) Plus I am always leery of docs who say the parent cannot attend the procedure. Doesn't fly with me.

PM Smilemomma. She's super and she's in FL, so there's an outside chance she could do it or at least know who could.

I am a person who was traumatized by an asshat pediatric dentist as a 2 year old and to this day I have no greater fear in my life than the dentist - that said I would most absolutely vote general anaesthesia for the simple reason that it will be the salmest for the little one and he will have no memory of the experience later in life. My daughter had to have dental work done at age 3 and we purposely chose a pediatric dentist that would use oral sedation so that we could avoid the scary dentist experience for her (even though her dentist is simply wonderful!)
Hugs to moth of you - I know how frightening this kind of situation can be for all involved.

UPDATE !!!!!!
I called the office in gainsville and told them about my situation ((dentist wants to pull them but only while he's awake, and that they need done asap)))
They said that he had to be bleeding or swollen/infected when we go in for them to do anything in the ER. So I told her that I didn't want to have this done while he was awake, if I waited 1.5 months for the next appt, I didn't know what would happen, so could she please PLEASE get us an initial appt....

So she got us in tomorrow at 1pm....
I am SOO happy. There is no guarentee that they will pull them tomorrow. but if it is bad enought it will.

Long story short, HE WILL NOT BE AWAKE !!!!!!!!!

Thanks Tummy for the medicaid transit info.... I got a yellow cab to drive us there and back curtosy of medicaid.... (otherwise I would of borrowed from my father for a rent-a-car, and paying him back would of resulted int NOT paying a bill...)

So thanks for any and all info !!!

That is my goal. I 100% believe that even though they are young and "don't remember" that they really do remember and during the surgury, all my son will know is that he is being assulted. wheres mommy, why are they doing this to me....
I don't want him to remember ANYTHING....
At the inital visit (friday) he was terrified while he was examineing his teeth. His eyes were wild, he wouldn't stop screaming, I couldn't stop crying....
I just couldn't let them PULL HIS TEETH OUT while he was awake... nitrus oxide or not....

When I called to cancel that appt the nurse understood why I was going to gainsville insted, It seemed like pulling teeth while baby is awake is something she didn't want to do either...
