Help! baby poo/pee question

My little guy is now 3 days old. I'm worried because he's not pooping or peeing much. He nurses every 2-4 hours for about 30 min, sometimes longer. He's had 2 big meconium poos, no poo at all today. He last peed this morning. We have a check-up tomorrow, but I'm freaking out. Is this normal for bf babies? I have no clue and I'm getting worried.

Thanks mommas!!

First thing I would ask you - has your milk come in yet?

I don't think so, when I hand express a little it still looks fairly clear-ish like it did before he was born.

That is probably why there aren't many wet/dirty diapers. Since you'll be having a check-up tomorrow - I wouldn't worry too much. That seems like VERY few diapers to me, but I would really pay attention to the way he is acting. It sounds like he's nursing a lot, so that would ease my mind a little. If he acts lethargic or looks dehydrated - that is when I would worry. Most likely it will all turn around when your milk comes in - and you will probably know when it comes in!

I was told the number of wet diapers per day old they are until your milk comes in.

Ok, that makes sense. So he still hasn't peed enough, but he seems happy. He's pretty alert when he's awake. Sometimes I wake him up, others he wakes up on his own. Thanks for the info/reassurance. I'm just so thrilled that he's nursing and feel like it's too good to be true after my experience w/dd. So besides being worried about him, I also worry that the 1st thing the dr will say is give him formula.

***He just got really fussy while I was typing this and he completely soaked his diaper!! Man, I never thought a wet diaper would make me so happy.

Thanks again!

Sounds normal to me from my experience. My milk came in with mine at days 2, 5, and 3. And the number of meconium poops varied widely in number too. Just continue nursing as much as possible, and drink lots.

Sounds normal to me too. When DD was a newborn, she didn't poo or pee much after the meconium went away and before my milk came in. We were worried about it too, but the midwife said it was fine. After my milk came in though...wow! We had some amazing blow outs!!! It surprised us both how much poo can come out of such a tiny baby, and how loud it is coming out

My best advice for big poops like that is to make sure they are done before changing the diaper. There were a few times we changed the diaper 3 or 4 times in about 15 minutes b/c we thought she surely had to be done each time.

yup, sounds normal. We were all concerned that DD hadn't had a real poop before her one week check up and were all set to ask about it...she had a HUGE yellow breastmilk blowout....all over the ped's scale. That is a story I'm saving for prom night!

yeah that

my midwife had this great little handout chart that you checked each time you nursed (so you knew you were getting at least the 8-12x per day) and also you wrote how many times pee/pood

It was 1 pee per day per days old up to the 6th day and then should be at least 6 per day from then on. I don't remember how many poos tho. It also showed diff kinds of poos and info about them. Great tool and i wish all moms could get one!

I know! It's funny how excited we get about bodily functions around here! Stella didn't have a lot happening either, and my milk is super slow coming in, but the midwife says all is ok, and things should turn around soon. I want to see more diaper action so I can stop worrying!!

Well, my milk finally came in yesterday afternoon. Ian has pooped and peed more since then. Still not 6 to 8 but he is doing better. He also developed jaundice. So I'm drinking as much as I can and nursing every hour or two to try to help flush him out. Thanks again for your help everybody!

Nate started getting jaundiced on day 3. The pediatrician just recommended taking him out in the sun, and watching it to make sure it didn't worsten. I can see that it's improving now (day 9), and he spent maybe an hour outside in filtered sunlight yesterday while relatives were here for my husband's birthday.

Hi everyone,
Ian is doing much better. His bilirubin level was pretty high so we ended up with a portable bili-light here at home (we almost had to get admitted to the hospital). He was on it for 4 days and is now doing much better. Now that my milk is completely in he is peeing and pooping a lot. It's still kind of greenish but is starting to look more like regular breast milk poo. What a difference a week makes.
