Local radio station segment: "Creepy or Not Creepy?"

My local radio station has a segment they call "Creepy or Not Creepy" that comes on during the afternoon commute. They have a daily topic, and take listener calls. (For example last week one of the topics was moustaches - creepy or not?)

Well, yesterday the topic was NIP!

There were several ignorant responses ("eeewww gross - definitely creepy", "only for newborns", "it attracts pervs", etc.) and the DJ seemed pretty close-minded and ignorant as well, but one guy's response made me laugh out loud - he said "I think it's fine and the healthiest thing to do for a baby. I'd rather see a woman breastfeeding her child in public than look at someone with nasty teeth smiling in public!"

Not that I agree that one must have perfect teeth to smile in public, but it did make me realize that there are a lot of things that are much more "gross" than NIP that are non-issues. (Think plumber's butts, pit stains, people just barely squeezed into spandex clothing, etc.)

I couldn't believe the number of people who responded with "creepy". I can understand (and I lament) how societal norms in the U.S. can make people a bit uncomfortable seeing NIP, but to refer to it as creepy! :

Sigh, it's so sad that *feeding* your baby is referred to as "creepy"

Seriously, WTF is WRONG with our society???

*sigh* reminds me of a thread I read once about when breastfeeding becomes creepy.

I can't enough. What-ev, people are sooooo ignorant...keep NIP ladies! The more people see it, the less "creepy" it'll become.

I agree that it is a sad commentary on our culture when feeding a child the optimal food is considered "creepy" because we are only supposed to use or display our breasts sexually or to please adult men.

Honestly, I am so fed up with this aspect of our culture that I have been taking a break from even thinking about this cultural illness. This forum is wonderful support and filled with wise mamas but why, WHY, WHY aren't we the majority voice on this? On this issue WE should be the mainstream.

Ugh - it makes me so angry I can only read and post on this topic once in a while!: : Otherwise, I'll just have to find some matriarchal commune somewhere... (joking, but it does make me THAT angry)!

that's just rediculous! aaahhh!

on a positive note, our local Houston national public radio (did i get that right?) covered our nurse-out last week that we held at the children's museum here in houston. here's a link to the archived radio segment. (it was on the friday 5pm news and about halfway thru, if you want to skip ahead)

I actually have used examples of stuff like that to get people to look at NIP in a new light. I've gotten quite a few "Hey, you're right"'s after pointing out that a few inches of hairy buttcrack is more offensive than a mother feeding her child.

What show was it? They were (apparently) talking about NIP on some show about a Rover (by a Rover - dunno). I guess it's a syndicated thing. I guess "he" was ranting about a woman who was nursing her baby in line for communion at church. He apparently TOLD her to leave and she did. : Then they were going on and on about the "whipping out" and kids can wait and blah, blah - the usual junk that ignorant people talk about. DH called me to tell me to turn it on. I listened for about 30 seconds before I was about to blow a gasket & turned it off. DH called in & got on air. I just wish I could have heard that part.

I think the people staring at a mom NIPping is creepy. Or the person who shreds a mag cover because of it is creepy. Or the people calling it gross is creepy.
