LExapro & BF?

Hi All-
I am EBF my son but have been having issues with PPD. i called my OB today and they called in Lexapro for me, he said it was the "cleanest" medication while BF, better than Zoloft, etc. Any ideas on this? I am really nervous about taking anything, but I am seriously going to kill my husband if I don't do something! My baby is 6 weeks old.
THanks!!!

I discussed antidepressants with a nurse practioner this last week. She mentioned Lexapro and said it is often prescribed to older people who are on a lot of medication already. I can't remember how she said it exactly, but it had something to do with being "gentler" or easier on the liver, I think. (I could be remembering this wrong, so don't pass this information on as truth, please!)

Lexapro must be very new. I can't find much about it with regard to breastfeeding.

When I was given Zoloft 12 years ago, my doctor believed it was not safe for nursing mothers and I weaned my 7mo baby. I'm sorry for that, but I'm not sorry for taking the medication. In the long run, my son needed me more than he needed my milk.

here's some good info:

i think lexapro might be an updated version of another ssri. not sure which--maybe celexa.

zoloft is always referred to as being the most breastfeeding friendly.

eta: coco4cloth linked to dr.hale's site. he definately is recommending zoloft over lexapro.

Lexipro is a "cleaned up" version of Celexa. My doctor says it's not safe in late pregnancy or to use while nursing a newborn because it causes a relatively high rate of somnolence and respiratory difficulties. Maybe with an older nursling it's better, though?

She says she likes Zoloft the best, too.

edited for spelling

After doing my own research ( from Dr. Hale's site and other places ) I found that zoloft to be the best for bfeeding, and that is what I have been told by a Dr. and a therapist too.

I'm on lexapro- but I didn't start it until he was 1. I would try the zoloft first.

I took Lexapro and it didn't help me at all. I went back to Paxil. Maybe you could try for just two months... Please do something...we don't want you killing you DH...: But just a word of caution...PPD or no PPD...sometimes you still want to give 'em a smack.

I was on Lexi until a month or so ago. My OB told me to start taking Zoloft immediately as there just wasn't enough studies on late-term pregnancy and early breastfeeding while taking Lexi. I also felt like Lexi didn't help me as much as Zoloft has help me in the last month! I feel sooooooo much better!!
