First Appointment - Page 2

I'm meeting my midwife at the end of August. I had the appointment made from my last pregnancy which ended in miscarriage last month. I just never considered that I wouldn't be pregnant again by the time my appointment time rolled around. And sure enough, I'll be about 6 weeks by then, which is far enough along for a meet and gree I.M.H.O.

By the way I'm so excited. My other pregnancies I had OB's and they treated me like a slab of meat. This is so nice! Already I've talked to my midwife on the phone and she's a real sweetie.

Are you doing a UP & UC?

Do you have a "check-up" that you do at home?

6 weeks exactly - with my CNM (though they offered an open appointment at 5w1d).

I dunno. I haven't even called yet. I don't see much need to go in during the first trimester so I'm thinking somewhere between 12-14 weeks I'll go in for the initial pap and chart history stuff. Though with my first preg I started seeing the midwife right around 5 weeks.

I haven't called yet. I don't see any need in going in until 12 weeks at least unless there is some concern. I am already on prenatals and such.

I had my second appointment last night, but it was the first with the woman who will be my midwife. And it was great!! There are two midwives in the practice that I need to go to to deliver at the hospital I want, and I randomly chose one for my first appointment at around 4wks. It was a really bad experience, and I had a very rough time. So I decided to get over the awkwardness and ask to see the other midwife. She's so great! The appointment last night was completely opposite to the first - she took the time to ask how I was, listened to me, talked to me like an equal, was reassuring and explained things - and all this after having delivered two babies in the middle of the night before and working a full day. It's such a relief, and a relief, too, that she seemed to think everything was looking good based on my hcG counts & symptoms. DH was able to come, and he really liked her, too - said he feels like she'll take care of me

Just wanted to share

I saw my midwife yesterday -- kind of odd because she is a very good friend and my midwifery partner and business partner. But it felt right and I can't imagine going to anyone else. I had already done my own bloodwork and stuff, but we went over my previous births (lots to talk about there!) and what we wanted. We want to prioritze cord blood collection as my son has a genetic disorder that will likely be helped by stem cells in the future. So we talked about the logistics of that, and communication and stuff. I will go back in a month or so and let everyone hear the heartbeat (we're not doing an early ultrasound or genetic testing or anything else like that, but I will conceed to a doppler check for the baby's heartbeat). It was fun!

We've been searching for a hb mw (it's not legal in our state) since I found out I'm pregnant. We *finally* talked to one last night on the phone! She comes very highly recommended by several aquaintances and we really, really liked her on the phone. She seemed surprised that we were looking for a midwife so early (I'll be 7 weeks on Saturday), but my dh wants everything lined up *yesterday!* We'll meet her face-to-face in a couple of weeks and make our final decision then, but I think she's the one.

The first actual prenatal appointment (with her or someone else) probably won't happen until I'm closer to 12 weeks, I suspect ... that'll be the end of September. I think I'm okay with that ... we'll see in a couple more weeks!!

Just had my first *real* appt (as opposed to the consult where we just talked last week).

I gave a sample of urine AND they had me do my own strip test for various things, can't even remember what the ones were that were negative/normal. But I had slight ketones in my urine (sign that I am not eating!! ketosis is the basic state of starvation that the Atkins diet encourages people to attain) Yikes!! It was slight, and probably had something to do with it being a morning appt and I had only had a smootie so far.

She did a Pap, and ended up causing a tiny bit of spotting, the only even tinge of blood I have seen yet. Even though I rationally *know* why I spotted for 10 minutes (like 3 drops), it still bothered me. I'm up tight, huh?

She took 3 vials of blood and said I could call on Monday for info.

And I made another appt for a month from now, so I guess that puts me at about 10-11 weeks.

ETA: I LOVE my MW--I already feel very comfortable with her!!

I'll be seeing my OB here on the 25th, and then the midwife in the state where I plan to give birth on September 15th.

I just had my first appointment on Monday (8/14), and I was almost 6 weeks at that point. I had a pelvic exam, swabs, bloodwork, urine, etc., and she went over my history.

My next appointment is in the second week of September, and we'll probably do an ultrasound then.

I have some consultation/tour type visits scheduled for next week. I don't know when my first 'real' visit will be

I had mine today. No heartbeat yet but the sac looked "as one would expect for someone this far along." I go back in a couple of weeks.

sept 19th I'll be 9 1/2 weeks, it will be with my OB who delivered my other two dd's
I was hoping to be seen earlier but at 9.5weeks we should be albe to hear the heartbeat so that will be something on the upside for my first appointment

1st midwife today

Yay! I had my first midwife appt this afternoon, and it went great. I'm so thrilled I'll be under midwife care this time, so far it's met all my expectations as to what midwife care is about. With ds #1 I had a ob who ran a clinic with 3 other ob's at the hospital, and patients see whoever's on duty. (In Ontario Midwifery is a government paid service, and you can choose where to give birth)

My midwife is so cool; she's a mom of 3 daughters, soft-spoken, middle-aged, wears attractive 'natural' clothes (hemp/cotton/linen i assume) and she has dreads! I was showing her my first attempt at charting and she noted that one weekend I wrote 'at Hillside-hot,tired' and she told me she was there too, and her husband is one of the Hillside Folk Festival coordinators-- how cool is that??? Seems like she shares some interests and is the type of person I would like as my birth coach and prenatal caregiver-

She took so much time with me, about an hour. She was totally cool with my son who wasn't feeling good today, and of course I love the whole midwifery care standards and ideals. Informed choice, respect, etc.

I'm just over 6 weeks- it's so great I was seen that early and not brushed off! My dr. hasn't even returned my call (2 weeks) informing him I got a + hpt!

My first appt with a family doc here at the clinic is 8/24. I am excited to hear the heartbeat but not excited to defend all my beliefs to this doc. I am currently trying to find a midwife for the rest of the prenatal/birth care but for now she is all I have.
