using something other than microfleece in pocket dipe

Can I use a cotton fabric as the liner in a pocket diaper? I know microfleece/microsuede works great at wicking moisture away in a pocket diaper, but I have lots of cotton fabrics around and I wanted to see if a pocket diaper is just as effective with a cotton liner.

You can use it, but it's not going to wick away moisture. If it's a cotton woven (like a calico or something) it's going to have that rather clammy feel when wet.

A cotton knit like interlock, sweatshirt fleece, or jersey would be perfect, nice and comfy like underwear. It will add absorbancy too. Birdseye is a cotton woven used in diapers, I think it feels fine when wet, as does flannel. If you aren't sure if it would feel nice, you could dampen a piece and feel it, you know?

If you want it absorbant use cotton, if you want it to wick moisture away and still feel dry you need some poly in there.

You could always make the inners out of whatever you want and then have cut rectangles out of fleece to lay inside the diaper to keep babe dry. That way you use up most of your cotton fabric for the dipe and only use a little scrap for the middle fleece part to lay in.

I've never made a pocket w/out fleece or suedecloth, but I'm about to make aio's with just birdseye and hemp. After using menstrual pads with both cotton and suedecloth as the layer next to my skin, I've decided that suedecloth is not all that comfortable. Yes, it wicks moisture, but it also feels clammy and hot. With cotton, it feels a little damp, but it's nice and cool. All future diapers I make will be with cotton or hemp against the skin. I don't think a layer that wicks moisture is a must, unless your child is just very sensitive to it. I would just be sure that all the cotton fabric rolls in so it desn't wick onto clothing.

I never used a "wicking" fabric for either of my kids' diapers...and they both decided that eighteen months was a GREAT time to start using the toilet. I often wonder, if I used something that made their butts feel dry even though they had just gone potty...would they have decided on their own SO YOUNG to put it in the pot? It's my humble opinion that the answer is no. SO, I'd vote, yes! Use the cotton fabrics!
