Cloth diapers? - Page 2

I only had one Mother Ease One Size (MEOS) and one Mother Ease Air Flow (MEAF) cover, but liked them very much! DD eventually outgrew them, though, so I sold them on the TP. If I found a really good deal on some used, I'd probably buy some for the new baby stash.

I actually used a Diaper Champ for my diaper pail. I used one plastic kitchen trashbag over and over until it needed to be used for the household trash. It was a small diaper pail compared to my wetbag, but when I lived in my own house it just reminded me to wash dipes every 2-3 days when it go tfull. With poopy diaps, I would first wash them out and then put them in the Diaper Champ wet. I never had a problem with mold or mildew, and there wasn't much of a smell from it. Wool covers were just laid out to air for a few hours and then reused. I washed those every month unless they got poopy or too stinky before then.

Im so confused...Ive been at the trading post, but so far am only looking at AIO's. Im afraid I'll end up with things that dont go togather otherwise!
It depends on how often you want to wash. I usually wash every other day, but I have enough dipes to get me through 3 days. You'll probably want 14-20 per child for a good 2-2 1/2 day supply. My dd is up for about 12 hrs a day and we go through about 6-8 a day.

A fitted is the diaper but it has no waterproof exterior so it needs a seperate cover.

Inserts are what goes into a pocket diaper for absorbancy. They are usually microfiber (I love cottonbabies, you can find them on the site that I gave you) or hemp. Microfiber absorbs quickly, so great for kids who "flood". Hemp usually holds more but doesn't absorb quickly, so some people have leaks.

Dh & I were just talking about this over the weekend. We'd both really like to go w/cd, but our one concern at the moment is that our washer is not hooked into our septic line, which has been fine for just normal washing since we use biodegradable soap... but we're thinking it wouldn't be so good to be washing baby poop out into our little creek : I thought I read somewhere that bf poop is fine & not an issue... anyone know if that's true? And we also have no idea, really, how much a baby poops - is it hard to wipe it off, etc? Sorry for the ignorance...

Peacechief - you might do well with a mini-shower that attaches to the outside of your toilet for you to spray off messy dipes into the commode after a poop. I'm thinking if you employed that method then you shouldn't have any trouble going ahead and washing your dipes - surely there'd be no more residue in the dipes than whatever animal poop gets into the creek! I don't have one as of yet (we've been CD our dd#2, in preparation for our baby #3, for about three-four months now) and I don't have any problem just shaking the poop off into the toilet. Every now and then if her poop is a bit 'stickier' then I do end up wiping it a bit, then stain spotting it before I put it in the diaper pail (all of our laundry stuff is free of harsh chemicals, environmentally safe, non-toxic, etc) but my dh seems to have a bit of a problem with his gag reflex and he is constantly coughing, half-gagging, etc when he has to do a poopy, so I think we'll get the sprayer thingy mainly for him.

neetling - to see the TP as well as a few other forums (Spirituality is one of them) you have to have a minimum of 50 posts, and be a member for 60 days as well. Once you hit that, you will see it at the very bottom of the forum listings out on the front MDC page.

Diaperpin.com is a great resource for learning about cloth diapers. There are reviews on a lot of cloth diapers and covers as well as a directory of online cloth diaper retailers. This is a link on the Diaper Pin website that I've found very useful: Cut of Cloth. Has articles about pros/cons of different diapering systems and directions on washing, etc. If you are handy w/ a sewing machine, making your own CD's could save a lot of $. I bought a Darling Diapers Pattern and I've really enjoyed starting up my stash. Oh yeah, and I agree w/ the others.....there's no way you'd need to spend anywhere near $1,000 on your diapers and supplies.

I may or may not be preggered right now. So I am popping in anyway
I thought I may belong in March, but now I think I might be in April. *fingers crossed*
I did the whole hyena thing with ds. I bought nice, fancy diapers that were cute, and I bought alot of them on the tp, alot new. I bought lots of different styles and things I like. I sold alot. I still have alot to sell.....

I think CD'ing is a bit different for everyone. You may need to buy a few different styles.. Or, you may want to do a few days worth of research first and then try stuff out (what I did)
This next time around, I will buy some cute fluff, but I will make most everything.. I like variety, and cuteness So it makes my day when I do 20+ diapers , to have something cute to touch and look at and use on my babies.

Some people prefer simplicity of prefolds, and the cost. And they buy lots of cute covers. Some like AIO's ( All in ones) like I do for outings. Some people prefer trimm diapers, some people don't care and they like bubble butt babies

So you can spend as little or as much as you wish. I would say, if you are on a budget where you really can't spend alot for diapers , you could probably get away with spending no more than $500 for all the diapering years. probably much less. Some people find making them is the cheapest way. Some aren't so inclined. Then you can look on the TP for deals.

The diapering forums here are full of excellent links and info on diapering. I decided fro sure to cloth diaper with ds because he had terrible reactions to the chlorine in diapers. He had swollen, bleeding sores that weren't healing. By 2 months I had enough diapers to switch to full time. Then I aquired more as I went. I use a dry, open pail. I find open pails stink much less. But I also have a laundry room with a large window and a door that closes I have a great machine and an easy routine. I use no more than 2 TBLSP per wash, and I do a super wash cycle, sometimes rinsing first on cold when i remember or have time- and then I do 2 rinses. i occasionally add bac out or vinegar.

I think everyone should CD It is so economical and healthy.

Also, check out hyenacart.com The market is literaly saturated right now. there is no reason to buy if you like to sew and want to make them. or if you want to buy only prefolds and covers, or buy used- but it should give you lots of ideas as to what is out there. I also knit diaper covers, so I stopped buying premade covers a long itme ago

I love using cloth and would never consider switching back to sposies

For this baby I plan on using the 3 dozen infant prefolds I have already (about half are indian and half chinese)
and buying some bummis covers (both pull on and wraps)

And I want a dozen xs motherease sandy's and a few nb swaddlebee's fitteds along with some xs airflow covers.

Oh and a variety of nb and small pockets, AIO's and a few OS dipes as well.

I am going to have more than enough since I will have to wash more often with two in dipes. Oh and I really want to try some bumGenius since they will fit both my newborn and toddler.

I had a massaging shower head that was removable, so I could take it down and spray the diapers out in the tub - I didn't have the $ to spend on the mini-shower since I had this. This would work if you already had a shower head like this or some other reason to get one - I actually like to wash DD's hair out in the bath too. Plus, I can easily wash the dog now during the winter!

Once you do that, you should be able to wash you diapers w/o a connection to the septic tank.

hi mamas

we've probably spent less tha $250 on our 2.5yo and we use cloth about 90% of the time. we have some kissaluvs (bought from green mountain diapers .com... 12 + 12 super soakers for 150, i think) and both bummis and tiny tush nylon covers and chinese prefolds with snappis. 12 kissaluvs plus some cpf are more than enough for us.

i didn't use cloth as much when he was tiny...but with baby #2 i plan on infant cpf with a snappi (i love snappis!).

in response to original ??s

i do a cold wash first with some vinegar (instead of soaking them), then a warm/cold wash afterward with small amount of laundry soap, then sun-dry.

for wipes, i just bought a bundle of 25 small, terrycloth dishrags from kmart and that has worked great for the past 2.5 years. in fact, i hate when we are traveling and i have to use wetwipes instead--cloth wipes are sooo much nicer!
