What kind of table/desk does your machine sit on?

Trying to get ideas here.. I am not talking about the tables with sewing machines IN them. But I need a desk/table to put in our room for my machine. Not sure what I should get yet.

Pictures and/or links are helpful.

Thanks!

I'll tell you what NOT to use! I have a card table that bounces ferociously when I sew. I have to keep checking the spool of thread on top of the machine because it falls off from the vibrations if I don't keep pushing it back down.

Right now, my sewing "corner" is the end of the dining room table that we don't use We're hard up for space, so I had to claim whatever I could. Lord knows if we have someone over for dinner, I'd actually have to MOVE the sewimg machine in order for them to sit at the table.

So to answer your question, my sewing machine sits on a large dining room table. My mom's sits on a vintage desk that's pretty sturdy.

I got a desk from IKEA that is absolutely perfect. Its the JERKER desk and its the sturdiest table for less than $100 that I have ever seen. Its pretty large, maybe 2*5 so there is plenty of room for a machine and some workspace or a sewing machine and a serger.

i also got my table from ikea. but for the life of me i cannot remember what it's called. it has a large rectangular table top (mine is 72" x 32", but you can get different sizes) and it sits atop two sawhorse style legs. it is incredibly sturdy and i can adjust the height. plus, the leg pieces have storage room.

Here's mine http://www.wonderbabydesigns.com/pics/south_corner.jpg (though this is in our old apartment)

It's a computer desk from Staples (Sauder brand) that has a return on one side and a hutch. It can be set up either direction and it was perfect for my multiple machines. I think it ran me about $300 but I expect it will last for at least another 10 years or so. Because it's that heavy manufactured wood (like particle board but stronger), it weighs a TON so it doesn't move at all.

I HAVE a sewing table that I got as a gift when I graduated high school. It's beautiful and I hate it. I currently use the kitchen table. I will also soon be on the market for a sewing table to go in our spare room, which is quickly becoming my sewing room (we don't have any dining room furniture, so that's what I've BEEN using, with the kitchen table dragged over to the dining room), but dh HATES the sewing mess! We have a very open floor plan in our house, and you can see the entire main floor, including the sewing mess in the dining room, from anywhere ELSE on the main floor. Sew...I'll be relegated to the spare room, as soon as we can afford a table. Actually, I don't think I'll mind too much. My kids LOVE to come in and turn knobs when I am in the bathroom or making dinner. I sit back down to sew, and everything is all screwy! Anyway. The short answer would be the kitchen table.

The table with the machine is from Crate and Barrel. My favorite thing is the shelves above the machine, perfect for my spools of thread and jar of zippers. The place where I lay my patterns is a card table. I don't like it. It's too low, and not big enough. What I want is a waist high dresser (for fabric storage) with a large top that perhaps flips open to be a big table, and then folds back to just look like a dresser. Sadly, I don't think this exists.

For fabric storage now, I have under my table, and a tall, narrow dresser.

All of this is in my living room. The table is a bit cluttered right now, as I am sewing tonight.

Soooo true! I have a long banquet table, and it's only a little better.

My machine and self healing mat for cutting sit on the dining room table which is the only eating area in our 1700 square foot home. When we need to use the table, usually only at dinner time, I take everything off and put it away. What a PITA, but I love sewing and there's no other realistic place to do it so I suck it up and do it. The table is very solid maple w/2 leaves (although I don't have any it it right now) and make a great sewing surface too bad we have to eat on it too.

Our dinner table. We now eat at the coffee table because you can hardly find a free inch on the dinner table. My table is a 4X3 foot table and its just perfect.

I do have a really nice Koala sewing cabinet - the quilters table - the kind with the machine in it. It's the single most expensive piece of furniture in my house and I stalked that table for years! They go on sale for 20% off in July and 2 years ago I finally bought it. I truly love it. But it's huge.

It's in beautiful bleached Oak - which is kind of pink.

I went to the Habitat for Humanity store to look at sewing cabinets that fold into tables. I was going to try to jerry-rig something to work with my machine. However, I found a great cabinet for $25 with a light-yellow early 60s Kenmore that I fell in love with too - and now that's my primary machine. What a bargain!

Two are on a dining room table from Ikea, three are on a desk from Ikea. If this link works properly, it'll show my sewing area from a blog post at myspace.

LINK to more pictures than you really need to see. :

oh, you should see my studio at our new house (we moved in about a year and a half ago). It's a little room on the back of the garage that the last tenant made using salvaged windows and french doors. It opens into the backyard so I can sew while the boys play. My sewing desk set up fits perfectly into the corner so I can look out the windows while I work. It's my favorite room in the whole world. I've got to get some pictures of it. Oh, and because it is not in the house, it's almost entirely free of toys!! (It's the cleanest room in our entire house, woo! )

You're welcome to stop in for a momma playdate whenever you're in LA

eBay! It's a Singer 99. I didn't want to get something too big and the 99 is just about right for her at age 4. I have a treadle too, in the front living room, but she doesn't get much use.

I have this:

But with a T-leg. I put a 3-drawer roller cart from Target underneath.
