Serger thread?

What is the best thread to use in a serger for diaper making. I assumed i should use cotton, but can't seem to find any that is labled for sergers. Is polyester ok or is nylon better? I don't know anything about sergers either (mine is in the mail) do you have to use four of the same threads?? Thanks

If you are using it for an AIO or a cover, you want to use polyester. I use Gutermann 100% poly. If you're making fitteds, it shouldn't matter, but I use the Gutermann poly for everything diaper related, just because it's handy.

Definitely want to use the 100% polyester and or wooly nylon that is designed for serger use. The speed/friction that a serger puts on the thread makes a huge difference in the thread making it to your garment without breaking or being frayed.

I have 'polyester' for the top stitches and a 'wooly nylon' loaded on the loopers currently to give more 'stretch' and a closer 'neater' look for rounding corners. I like it. It is (the wooly nylon) a PITA to thread the first time though, as it's 'fuzzy'! so be warned!

I have all 100% polyester loaded in my old serger (top stitch and both loopers) and that still looks nice enough, especially if you are good at 'cornering' and edge work, and is definitely easier to work with if you are chaning colors often!

Happy sewing!

I love wooly nylon in the loopers for diapers, it makes the curves look so much nicer especially when you are just starting out. Even wooly in just one looper (lower) with a pretty thread in the upper looper helps. To thread wooly nylon more easily, tie it to a piece of maxilock thread, use the maxilock to thread through your thread path, then gently pull the end until the wooly comes out.

You can also use spools of regular thread instead of buying the big cones if you have a quick and small project to complete. The loopers use up a lot of thread though, so I usually use cones on the loopers and save the thread spools for the needles. Your machine should have adapters for using regular spools of thread on your thread stand.

And if all this sounds like Greek, you'll be speaking Greek soon enough yourself! Come back and ask more questions after your serger arrives, and good luck!
