How early did you know? - Page 2

Lots of interesting kids here.

And, just in case anyone is reading this say whoa maybe I don't belong here, let me note that my child is profoundly gifted and didn't speak before he was a year old, walked very late, etc. Early milestones are interesting but may not be that much of an indicator.

I totally agree with this. My 5-year-old niece is now one of the most intelligent children I've ever known personally, but didn't talk/walk or do much of anything at an early age. We didn't notice she was "gifted" until she was probably 2 1/2, at which point she could already write her rather long name and most of the letters of the alphabet. Before that, she was just an "average" baby.

Because DS was born into a fairly geeky/wordy/arty family, much of what he did seemed par for the course - also, i had no other experience with children his age with whom to compare notes as it were. i assumed all kids were hyper-aware and alert and never slept and remembered arcane bits of knowledge and loved letters and words and made their own games and songs and had massive attention spans and really clever hands.

But it really became clear when he was about 2 and he started doing things that would just blow us away. He could write words backwards and forwards and from the center. He read signs on the highway. he could draw pieces of a whole picture out of order, then progressively put them together over a series of pages. I remember being in a grocery store when he was maybe just 2 or so, and i was saying, "let's be calm, now, it's time to be calm" and he said "Like dot com?".

I mean, i was a gifted kid, my Dh was a gifted kid, so were my folks - but i think he somehow got those genes PLUS some extra in there.

and he's a wicked perfectionist - if you place something "wrong" or draw an extra line somewhere, he's the first to let you know. "You missed a bit, mommy! right there, the little bit on the "D"" He will practice things for hours until he gets them just so. He just...does it. it's him.

I fear how school will be....
