We have lots of scrap wood trim. It just occured to me to make blocks from it but I don't know if it's safe. We have cherry, hemlock, fir and poplar. Are these safe for making blocks for children?

All should be safe woods-- even the hemlock! The products with which you finish the wood are much more important to their safety. I can't recommend a product by name, but I know you can finish them with beeswax somehow.
