Wearing your baby? - Page 2

We've got a Hotsling and a Moby...both DH and I use them both all the time. DS loves being in both of them, most of the time. I haven't tried yet to nurse in the moby, but I'll probably try that eventually. Love love love both of them; can't believe more people don't use these. We always get lots of comments when we're out with him. Especially when DH is out with him--it's like people are surprised to see a GUY out with a baby, or surprised when the two of us are together that it's the guy who is wearing the baby and not the mother. But yay for babywearing.

I have 2 pouch slings (a hotsling and a new native) and finally had some time to sew a ring sling last week while family was here to help. I go back and forth between which pouch sling I like better; I think the hotsling will win out in the end, but the new native fit me better for the first few weeks.

Now that I have a ring sling, I am loving it for around the house. My little guy really likes being upright; and I have even managed to nurse in the sling a few times (nursing in a pouch sling does not work for me at all).

I have an Ergo that I am looking forward to trying once he is big enough. I also want to try it out with my 2 year old DD to see how it works for her...just haven't gotten around to it yet (along with many other things that I just haven't gotten to yet I guess that's life with a toddler and a newborn).

I showed my husband the babyhawk site and he is going to order one for himself. He is totally jealous that I can sling the baby and he can't (he is super tall and my slings are way too small for him) Who knew the hubster would be such a slinging, breatsfeeding, co-sleeping, cloth diapering advocate after just a few weeks!

If you're looking at BabyHawk, I'd DEFINITELY spend the $10 on the minkee lining. OMG it is soooo soft and squishy

I just wish I could wear mine in the car!

I have a NoJo and an Ultimate Baby Wrap.

The UBW is super stretchy so no matter how tight I wrap it the baby sags way down. Argh. Also I can't figure out the cradle carry so the only one I've done so far is the upright newborn snuggle.

The Nojo is hit or miss. I can't seem to distribute the weight properly so DD is often squished. She screams when I put her in it to start off - I've gotten her to settle down and go to sleep in it twice. I've only done the cradle hold with this one.

I want to buy another sling but a) DH will kill me and b) I have no idea which one to buy. I have chronic back problems so nothing is overly comfortable including the bjorn (which is what we use when we go out for the most part) and I haven't found any places where I can try out the slings. Perhaps my LLL meeting in October...

Any suggestions? I'm 5'10", 155 lbs if that makes a difference...

I have a maya and ds loves it. He goes right to sleep in it. I had an over the shoulder baby holder with the other three, but it was too bulky. I like the maya much better.

I'm 5'10 and I would LOVE to be 155

OK that was totally off topic, but anyway, we used the Bjorn for the first two. I just didn't know any better. If you're looking to get another carrier I would highly recommend a Mei Tai (ours is the Babyhawk I keep raving about). I find it MUCH more comfortable than the Bjorn, and easier to use. But most importantly MUCH more comfortable.

Well, I was so excited to wear my baby & its not working out like I had hoped.
She is a touch-me-not!! She does okay in the Hotsling IF she is very happy & I carry her outside for awhile b4 putting her in it!
The Bjorn ... well she screams!! I dont think she likes not being able to see much.
I also have a wrap that I'm not so good at... so I have a hard time getting her in it & she usually ends up mad:

I think I want to try an Ergo now:

nursing in a wrap

Sabbath (and anyone else reading who had the same issue),

I found a great slideshow at babywearer showing in detail how to tie the wrap and switch back and forth between FWCC and nursing:

I tried it out and it worked very well! I had been tying the wrap slightly differently, so this really helped.

I have a Maya Wrap that dd loves but it hurts my back. I just bought a BabyHawk Mei Tai and I LOVE it! It is great on my back and dd is happy in it too.

Hehe... I'm a dummy...

So at my postpartum checkup I started talking slings with my midwife figuring she'd have BTDT. I told her I was feeling like DD was so very squished and uncomfy when I put her in the sling in a nursing carry, and that her head seemed crooked at a bad angle. So she asked me which side I put DD on... I was confused since my Nojo is just a ring sling and can be used on either shoulder, which I mentioned.

"No," she said, "when the sling is over your left shoulder which side is the baby's head on?"

"The left," I replied.

"Hmm, there's a lot of weight on that side. I always put the baby's head on the opposite side from the sling shoulder."

Suddenly I had one of these moments: Fortunately my midwife is a kind person and didn't laugh too hard at me, though I wouldn't blame her if she went off posting on her midwife chat board about her slingfool of a mom!

And for the record, I tried the sling the "right" way when I got home and DD passed out in .5

Wait a minute! I do the same! I put his head on the same side the sling is over my sholder. And I too think his head is in weird angle and he hates it. But I did try to put him on the other side and it did not work either. I could not figure it out at all! At least on the other side could still put him in it.
I am really confused.

I looked at the website where I bought the sling from and I am putting him in exactly as shown there, so I don't think it's wrong. And I don't think you are dummy.

This link was posted on the SAHM thread...lots of good instructions (I've been putting ds in with head on the ring side also - because of other instructions I saw. This one does it both ways ("cradle hold" and "reverse cradle"). I haven't tried any yet - but can't wait to try tummy-to-tummy.

Thanks I was able to get DD comfortable enough to sleep that way a couple of times, but like I said, she was all kinked up. So now I'm pretty curious on which side the other mamas here are wearing their babies when using a cradle hold. Mrs Surplus, that was a really good site - thanks! I bookmarked it and will be studying some more

Another question (sorry for all the newbie jazz): is anyone able to nurse in the sling without supporting the baby with one hand? I'm finding that I'm never able to get the sling tight enough that DD can get latched and stay latched without my holding her back/head. Part of the problem is that I'm not really able to tighten the sling once she's in it (stupid Nojo)... but even when I have someone else help me it's still not working out. Much to the chagrin of my toddler who wants me to lift her here, help her there, etc... I'd really like to be totally hands free if I can.

They should offer classes for this stuff!

i have a hotsling, a maya wrap pouch and an OTSBH and always put babe on same side as sling on my shoulder. directions for all 3 say either side will do but i find the pouch too shallow on the side opposite the shoulder i'm wearing on...however, i havent' even attempted to nurse in any of those slings since i think he looks very uncomfortable in them. i have nursed in my Kozy Carrier and in my Moby but just at home since i'm not confident about the discreetness yet.

Crashing in from August DDC! I just had to comment - you're the only other person I know who has one! Aren't they awesome? I carried ds around in ours today and totally LOVED it! I realized last night that my OTSBH is wearing out, so I think I'm going to have to buy another one!
