Is anyone carrying their newborn in a sling?

I can't wait to start using my sling with DD#2, but I haven't tried it, yet. She's still pretty sensitive to being jostled around and I don't want to freak her out while I figure out how to put a newborn in a sling!

I also didn't start wearing DD#1 until she was a little bit older, but I assume there's no reason I can't sling a newborn, is there? Does anyone have tips on what sling is easiest to use? I have a pouch (which I bought when I was pg so I've got no experience with it) and a ring sling and two Mei Tai style slings.

I just want to be able to keep her on me, but have my hands free. Right now I am setting her down alot while she's sleeping, which I am sure is fine, but I would love to have her snuggled on me constantly

I've tried the pouch I bought, and I don't like it so far. In fact, I keep thinking I must be doing it wrong. I can't even see ds when I put him in it!

Yep! Both me and DH have slung dd...starting on day two. She curls right up into fetal position with her legs crossed, and settles down for walks until she's hungry again. We just make sure her chin isn't too down on her chest so that she can breathe ok. DH has a New Native and I have a Lucky Baby...

I've tried breastfeeding in the sling too, but so far, I can only do it sitting down, but the sling is good for privacy when I'm NIP.
Good luck! And I'd love to see photos of other babies in slings!

I have a Maya and I have been slinging since day 2 also

I nurse everywhere in mine -- but I have no choice since i have 2 kids to chase after -- baby has to get her meals on the fly.

awwww! NewAtThis, those are wonderful pictures!

I am hoping to sling my newborn sweetie if s/he ever decides to leave the safety of my belly! Due date is tomorrow, so I guess I can start getting antsy soon

Can't wait!

Nate's been in the sling since day 3 or 4. He curls up and goes to sleep usually. Thank goodness, or I could never get the grocery shopping done.
Ryan never liked the sling, and A.J. didn't like it until he was a little older, so this is my first time carrying an infant who enjoys it. At 2.5 weeks he's only just starting to be able to nurse while on the move. Up until now it was impossible; the slightest movement and he'd unlatch and cry.
I just have a WAHM cotton-hemp blend ring-sling. I have 2 other slings, but I'm really only using the one because it's my favourite.

I kind of wish I had a sling. There are so many that I don't even know where to start. I tried a ring sling with dd and we never figured that one out. I like the looks of the pouch slings that NewAtThis posted. Adorable pics btw!

Those pictures are so cute!!!!!

I read through this thread a couple of hours ago and got inspired to try out a sling. Luckily Eloise loved it and snuggled right in-- I used the ring sling and carried her upright high on my chest. Just have to figure out a way to keep her head more supported, I felt like I either needed to lean back or keep my hand on her head. It will probably take a little more practice. I was so excited that I actually made dinner with her sling (don't worry, no cooking on the stove involved) for the friend who had actually come over to make dinner for me! LOL

that's the way I carry Ollie mamamilkers and to support his head you just have to pull the fabric behind his head and then pull the outer side of the tail.takes some pratice but then it's a breeze.that's the only hold i really do until they are about 6 months

We have a peanut shell and I don't know what I'd do without it. We haven't been out much except to the Dr.s and to my aunts house, but it has come in really handy when I need my hands free. Sean falls asleep the second I put him in there and we have been able to nurse in it too.

I have a pea in the pod hemp pouch from Mom and Me Creations that I just LOVED with dd. Very user friendly and easy. I also have a Maya wrap that I didn't get the hang of last time, but I am going to retry this time as I have heard that NIP is easiest in it. Then there are 2 Meitais (a Kozy and a Saichei) that I got after dd was a little older that I am anxious to try with a newborn. If I could justify it, I would get one of the new Babyhawks - they look amazing - especially with the new "headrest"

Oh, if you are afraid of "losing" your babe in the sling, fold up a blanket and put under him/her and that will elevate them a touch.

Sailmom-- that's a great idea to use the blanket! I'm trying that now. This morning is my first attempt at a pouch, but I think she's comfy (she's sleeping, anyways!) so we'll have to keep practicing!

I am so addicted to slings. I wish I could get a bunch more!

Certified sling junkie here. I started off with some weird Kangaroo something or other sling which I wore with dd1, but I couldn't figure it out very well. Then when she was six months I got my first Over the Shoulder Baby Holder (which I still have). I got rid of the Kangaroo. Since then I've gotten another OTSBH (which I still have). I've also had two Slingeeze slings - both of which I had to eventually get rid of because they ripped. I have a water sling - if you love to be in the water, they are fabulous. I had a Maya Wrap which I hated and gave away. We have a Snugli for dh because he prefers those to the sling - his arm feels restricted in the sling. I carried my two youngest as infants in slings and they loved it. When dd2 was six weeks old - we went to Chuck E. Cheese with our kids and other family. She slept the whole time in it while I played Skee Ball, hoops, driving games, and chased the other kids. I bought a Bei Bei when dd2 was older and that is the COOLEST! I love it - it has this awesome dragon on the back. My big splurge for this baby (besides the midwife, of course!) was a Rockin' Baby Sling. It is very cool looking. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to wear Little Bean in it though because dd2 has claimed it for her own. I have to carry her everywhere in it now! Ugh - it's a bit uncomfortable for me to carry her right now, but it's usually for very short distances. I'm anxiously awaiting a sling my mom found for me and is sending me. Did I mention that I'm a sling junkie?

Yup, we've been using the sling here since about day 3 or 4. I have a Maya Wrap and LOVE it. I also prefer carrying dd in the upright or shoulder position, but I think it all depends on the mama and the babe. My younger sister, who's dd is 10 days older than my dd, prefers the cradle hold with her Maya, as does her dd. Right now we're in Maine visiting my parents and my sis and I have been slinging our babes all over town :-) Both babies have been to the beach many an afternoon, and the sling is the best thing for them - we can keep them out of the sun (use the tail for covering the head), and can also nurse them discreetly in there :-) I have some pics of the 2 of us on the beach with our babes in slings and will share when I get home and can upload! I also have an Ergo Baby Carrier that I'm anxious to try out, but dd is still too small. My sister has one too and her dd, who is much bigger than mine, lol, fits great in it!

I think it's better to use the slings from the beginning, makes it easier for the babies to get used to them!!

another sling user we have been using a pouch since day2 and a wrap carrier since day 3, it sure makes it easier to get things done. we do tummy to tummy position in both

I use an Over the Shoulder Baby Holder for now, it's the most comfy for DD. I have a Moby Wrap but can't figure it out. I was to get a Mei Tei too. I'm a sling addict.

I wear ds in a pouch or sling every day since the day after birth.

Another slingin' mama here! DS#2 has been riding in his hotsling since day 3 He LOVES it! I'd love more slings, but have to be happy with just one (I'm spending all our $$ on CDs- I'm a CD junkie!).

OTSBH is working out quite well-- Haakon has no idea all the cool places he's been. I think I started with it on day 4 or 5. DH has been using the hotsling, I feel like it keeps the babe a bit too low at this stage, but he likes it.

I second the idea to prop up a newborn with blankets (actually, I like a premium prefold dipe, which comes in handy for spitup, too) so you don't lose'em in there.

Don't worry too much about squishing them--they like it. Just think of how squished they were a week or two ago!
