I'm getting out of debt, with the snowball method. Wanna play? - Page 8

I'm wishing for one of Dave Ramsay's books this Christmas.
What libraries have books? our local libraries aren't very well stocked
I'm going to make a plan and try to get DH onboard.

Don't forget inter-library loan to get books not in your local library. I request everything through the inter-library system online through my local library. Now, getting the time to read is another story. I spend a lot of time listening to the archived radio shows.

Our written budget is showing us that we have more money to put to debt. Now that we have really cut everything out things look clear! We have also set up a reward for when we pay off the credit card. We will take our monthly payment and spend it on the family. We are planning on bowling and eating out. We have $2500 to go and putting $200 each month. Looking forward to the end of the month to see how much more extra we can send.

We both got extra big paychecks this week (holiday pay I guess, added an extra day) plus some extra we had saved to send with this paycheck, so we were able to send $600 to a $722 CC bill! Next month it'll be another $0 on our chart!

Congratulations, that's fantastic!!

Subbing

I've been playing, just not posting. I sold a horse last week (great home, good match with new owner) so I can totally pay off one debt. DH has some retro pay coming next month, I have a holiday bonus coming and we should be out of all consumer debt by 3/07 or so. Still have some Student loans to pay off.

Yeah, it's irksome. I have a cc through my credit union and they don't up the limit unless I applied for an increase. I've had it for many years and I've almost never used it. It has a zero balance. It is in my name only. I keep it open for two reasons. First, is so that I have credit with something in my name only and second, so that I can have it in the event of a true horrible emergency.

We used this method, but with a modification:

We found a credit card that was 0% interest for one full year, without balance transfer fees. We moved $10,000 in debt to that card and faithfully paid the $200 a month minimum payment. While doing that, we also paid the additional $400 a month into an interest bearing money market account. When we received our tax refund, we put that money in the money market acocunt, too.

At the end of 11 months, we had saved enough to pay off the debt. (We also paid off our van over this same period.)

We earned $230 interest in the money market and saved $1700 interest (by sitting on a 0% credit card).

Had we simply paid it off, we would have carried another nearly $2000 of debt.

They key and trick to this, of course, is to faithfully pay the bill every month to avoid late fees and rate changes. If we had missed a single payment, our interest rate would have shot back to 18%.
Aside from a $2500 remodeling debt (sitting on a 0% credit card till March) and our house, we are debt free.

It is such a magnificent feeling!

Dec budget

I just worked through the december budget. We won't make much of a dent in the cc, but will not have to put any more Christmas on cc. I am estimating we will only have HEL by end of April. HEL will be at least 18 mos. The light is getting brighter!

Not that it isn't always tight....it'll be even tighter. The main thing is that we did not pay with our cc!
AWESOME!!!!!!!

I want to join in a little late, we don't have huge dept but have to pay down some of the smaller items quickly for our home loan to get closed on...

we have a cc that i settled for $457 the owed amount was $680 with all the intrested, ect. It will be paid for friday by my paycheck.

then we need to pay off dh's cc that we owe $516 on, not bad, but we hope to pay it off with his pay check the following friday.

then we need to pay down our car loan (only loan left) by $500 so if we do some ebaying and dh works some task force (police overtime for ticket writing) he should get paid enought that we can pay this off with his next check as well.

Then we will have only one car loan and our home loan (but not till we close on it )... ALL CC GONE! only ONE car loan, and that's it, that will feel so good! 1.5 weeks i need this closed up and in the hole!

Wow! That must feel very good. Someday I will be there. Someday.

We just got an extra $500 yesterday from selling some old stuff and already the debate has started about where it should go. If we put it on DP's bank of america CC (which is at 33%) it would only leave $50 to pay off, which I could easily find the money for.

He still feels like it's bonus money and I think he wants to go spend it all. I would *LOVE* to see this CC paid off - it's such a suck at 33%.

I hope to convince him this weekend - maybe offer him $25 to buy something fun with and put the remaining $475 on the card?

So, do I pay the smallest cc off first? Is that how the snowball method works? Then once that's paid, do I use that money to pay the next smallest bill? What do you all think about us trying to get a low % cc to do a big balance transfer? I really think we could pay off all cc by the end of 2007.

It just sickens my stomach to put this in writing; to see how much debt we have. Earlier this year I wanted to start putting double payments on the car loan and DH thought that we couldn't afford it, which I knew we could if we would just follow a budget. Then he decided that he really needed to buy another boat (used from his friend), so we took over the loan. I was so mad about that because that $ could have went towards the car loan.

Please offer some advice. Thanks.

Hope you get there! It feels so great doesn't it?

Has he read TMM? My DH loved it and went on a spree selling his things on ebay to make more money to contribute to the debt! lol
Yeah, offering to spend a little bit on him would probably be good, my DH would appriciate it. For my DH I'd offer to go to Subway, or maybe see that movie that's coming out Eragon (sp?) and put the rest to the debt.

The snowball works by listing all your debts smallest to largest. You get current and pay the minimum on everything, this is hard for some people but it sounds like you are in a somewhat better situation. Then you put all your extra money to the smallest debt till it's gone, then you put all the same money plus the minimum payment from the now-gone debt (thus your snowball grows) towards the next debt. Each time you repeat you have one less bill to pay so more money can go to the next debt - hence the snowball!

how much is the interest payment?

"He still feels like it's bonus money and I think he wants to go spend it all. I would *LOVE* to see this CC paid off - it's such a suck at 33%."

Can you figure out what you would pay in interest on the cc? That might shake him up a bit because then there would be the balance plus the interest next month. Maybe a "treat" from the paycheck after it is paid.

It is bonus money--the bonus is you get to pay down the debt sooner!

Jenn be

Ask DH what happens if he loses his job. How will the bills get paid. I really second the poster who said to get Dave Ramsey's book! Even if he will not stay on a budget you can be very careful with what you spend on.

I got my book!!!!! Yippie!!!!

I just got the Dave Ramsey book and have read up to pg 80 or so. Last month we paid of 1 card and this month we have paid off another. We are down to 9 cards and my goal next month is to pay off 2 of them! I'm so excited. Then we will be down to 7. What are some ways others of you have snowballed your way down? I'm a SAHM so I do ebay.
We bought windows and opened a home depot card ( why?) I wished we would have used cash on that one.
Good news - he agreed that we should put the entire $500 on it. He said he wanted to make sure it was making the biggest impact on our life and we both agreed that we couldn't think of a better place for it to go. So PHEW!!

Also - do any of you have a copy of the TMMO that I could pay to be mailed to me? Our library seems to have lost theirs. I will mail you cash to pay for the shipping to me. Thanks!

Rosie, my first rule of gettting out of debt, is not to spend any money on books to tell me how to do it! If you call your library and ask, they'll order it for you from another library. Free. And they can order you movies too. Took me years to find this out.

Does everyone here know about GPT sites? I know that's not what this thread is about, but I was getting desperate last month and tried it after reading some threads here on Mothering. It reminds me of years ago, (When most of YOU were unborn yet, or tiny babies ) and women would rebate and triple coupon and get their groceries for free AND $25 -50 bucks. Cash. THen they changed how coupons worked.

A few years ago, well probably 5 or 6, I 'Pricelined' my groceries. I bid on what i'd pay for everything, got my price and took my card to teh grocery store. It was like an ATM card. I got incredible prices.

This is gfrom your home computer. YOu Get Paid To...take surveys, sign up for free trials, or things liek a month of Blockbuster online (That cost 10.49 for 30 days, and I got $30 for it.) I don't want to take over this thread with it, but if anyone wants to know more, they can PM me. I made $366, without ever going out, and didn't feel overworked. THere are threads here on MDC about it, in FInding Your Tribe, I think. I spent some time searching for reputable sites, so don't hesitate to ask if you're looking to make money.

It's been a tricky few months....okay, it's been a tricky year. But 2 weeks ago, some guy rear-ended the woman behind my DH, who rear-ended DH, who...well, you get the idea. DH was unhurt, but his car was totalled.

He wanted to buy a new (used) one, right away. I stalled and we got a rental for 30 days, which is under insurance. And ten I was freaking out! A car payment this winter will kill us! DH is due to be laid off anytime from christmas on. His car, a 1995 Honda with 270,000 miles on it wasn't worth anything , except to us. (New tires, brakes, gauranteed for life exhaust system, etc) It was to be the twins in the spring, so we were fisxing it up. Figured they'd get another year fulltime out of it, and then whoever was home from school woudl have it.

GOne. And if DH got his car, they were going ot have to just save up for their own. Then I had a brainstorm. Take the ins money, every penny any of the 4 of us could raise, and buy a car for cash plus, if necessary, $1000 loan. Buy a car for dh to use for the next month or so. Twins work and pay us back teh ins money, ($1000 loan, i'd pay for). THen in the spring, we use the money they pay back, plus every cent we can find, to put on a down payment for DH.

That gives me 5 months to convince HIM that he wants a car that costs as much as we've saved!

CAN I DO IT?! Can I put together (Oh this osunds so impossible)$5000? THe girls are hard workers, on has a job, the other wants her license first (2 weeks)and they'll pay up, so it's only $2000.

I WILL! Today, dh took back $12 bottles and cans. He picked them up at work, or around the neighborhood he was working on. THe guys at work all give them to him. (He gives them to the kids who return them for special projects...Like dd needing stuff for college, new clothes, anything their saving for. Usually he gets about $50 - $100 a month!)

WEll, this is long-winded, but ti was thoughts of a rather sad holiday, with few gifts and needing a car that got me to try GPT. So it all ties together. And I think it willl be a short-lived thing. Possibly a few years and then it will peter out, so I'm using it to patch things together. But $366 will put a big feast together, and a few fun gifts for everyone. And I'll still be able to make my CC payment on time.

No using those cards to buy gifts!!!! Make 'em (Theres a thread about that....I can find it if you need it. Lots of easy ideas), regift, bake, sell stuff on E-bay! If you think you can't do anything...start a thread. I'll come and give you ideas. Be a holiday helper. Offer to bake for people, put up a sign. (I did that years ago) Babysit a few evenings after your dh gets home. Have a sleepover weekend for kids, : starts after dinner, you provide a few games, a snack, movies and the atmosphere. Bake cookies. String some crepe paper. Make a fun breakfast. Charge $50 a kid. Make it really fun, you can make a bunch. Even a sign saying you'll address Christmas cards, and mail them would probably work! Maybe $.10 a card? (pls postage)

A sign at the end of your driveway will get more response than you'd think...and I live 2 miles down a back, dirt road in a town of 900. But a sign sells eggs, pork and houseplants. (Divide that giant aloe, pot those baby spiders and sell them for $5.00 each! )

Ok, back to our regularly scheduled thread.

Jennbee, the first time I sat down and added up ours, I put my head on the table and cried. How overwhelming. Doing this (Snowballing) is really ahving an effect. I've paid off two, cut a third in half, and only have one more after that. And for the first time ever my dh (of 21 years) understands and is in on it with me! It will get better!

Congratualtions to everyone who's paying things off. YIPPEE!
