Dh and I suspect our autistic ds is also quite gifted. At the least, we expect hyperlexic, but his pattern matching is just off the charts...to the point our OT is having problems finding something that will challenge him in that area.
With the exception of people who are with him a lot, most people look at us like we are delusional when we try and say he is gifted because he hardly talks. However, when asked to name something he appears to read the captions under the pictures instead of just looking at the picture and will choose "hamburger" off the menu by pointing to the word instead of the picture.
Is there a way to test for IQ with a verbally delayed child? It is affecting his therapies and I can see potential for extreme difficulties in school settings. His language and social skills are around 18 months I would guess, but he can do 1st & 2nd grade educational software and puzzles without any assistance.
btw...I am borderline gifted...a bit over the threshhold, but certainly not a genius. DH, however, is well over genius range, and had many of the classic problems of super gifted kids. He is now a university instructor (computer science) and did research with NASA over the summer if that gives you an idea of the genetics

She's got a damn near eidetic memory, yet she can't be trusted not to run into the street when she's outside, and doesn't remember to look when she's getting out of a car on the wrong side.

That's where I remember everything....
