but a serious observation.

Brownies and other junk food will make your children fat.

This is what I wanted to say to my ds's friends mother when she was wishing that her son would slim down some more. This was said after giving the children a snack of frosted brownies with mini m & m 's in them.

And you might want to toss the Game Cube, too.

Sometimes, I just want to say "Duh".

I have a friend who has been giving her DD chocolate chip cookies since 8 months old : and then wonders why she is hyper.

It's true. My younger brother drinks, on average, 6-8 sodas per day. He has been "chubby" since he was about 5. He's the only one of 4 siblings to be on the heavy side. The other 3 of us don't care for soda.

Well, my 45lb almost 8yo would disagree...my kids are allowed junk food and *gasp* video games and they could all afford to gain a few pounds so really, junk food MAY make your kids fat, but I don't think it's fair to say that they WILL make your kids fat. Semantics, I know.

True. My kids are allowed junk food (they bought me a huge ice cream bar tonight actually. And we all ate them before dinner lol) and video games. Dd is quite thin and Ds has always been built big. It is what it is. We try for some kinda balance.

Good point. I should clarify there are some other bad dietary habits in that house. It is not just the Brownies.

Yup, I watched TV and ate junk food and I was the smallest kid in my class for YEARS. In 2nd grade we had this deal on the Guness book of world records and I weighed 3lbs less than the worlds fattest cat.

All things in moderation I always say. An occsional brownie or cookie never killed anyone, if your whole diet consisits of brownies and cake and soda pop then you may have a problem, but if you feed your kid healthy stuff the majority of the time and they get lots of active play then it's okay.

I think the point is not that junk food will absolutely make every child fat and hyper. The point is that the mother was handing her kids junk food then complaining about their fitness level. Being part of the problem and not the solution, ya know? I'd just tell her if she's going to complain about her kids being overweight, lazy, hyper, whatever... maybe she should take a closer look at what she's handing them to put into their bodies and their activity level.

Yes, I've got one of those, too. Almost 8 and 49 lbs. Sigh. He can have anything he wants to eat.

Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking.

Yeah, I agree. Also, instilling good dental hygiene habits as well....im sure she wouldn't want to deal with cavaties on top of that...

I was going to say the same thing. My DS eats junk food (but he also eats a lot of fruits and healthy food) and plays the occasional video game and he has no isse with weight.

He is pretty much allowed to eat whatever he wants. I try to limit the candy though so he doesn't get super hyper. Plus, i limit his intake of Red40 and a lot of the candy that he likes has that in it.
