Serger advice... Juki 655 or Pfaff 4852

Is anyone familiar with these machines? i have found the Juki on line and the Pfaff at a local vac/sew store. Both are under $500, which seems like a great deal. Though I will not have access to a free class with either of them (not even sure if I can pay for a class)

Any advice? TIA!!!

I have a pfaff 4870, I'm a serging novice, but I love the machine. My pfaff guy said that series was made very well and not to get rid of it ever! My friend has a Juki, don't know the model, but I know they make good sergers...I think they make the sergers for Viking and Elna.Try them both if you can and which ever one you get the better feel for is the one for you. Also check patternreview.com for consumer reviews.

Thanks!!! I did check pattern review, and there were only a handful of reviews for each (all pretty good)......

Choosing a serger seems like such a difficult decision to me

I know, i know. That's how I felt with picking a sewing machine. i researched for months. I went on countless forum groups, I asked so many questions. I did finally find a group or thread "What's the best sewing machine" and I started to get a sense of what I wanted. It helped for me to know what I wanted to do with the machine. I didn't really care about embroidery, but maybe wanted to be able to do a few decorative stitches or monogramming. I wanted to grow into and be able to use it for years to come. This was going to be my first "real" machine. I vascilated back and forth, even buying a kenmore and keeping it for 2 months until I got MY MACHINE. It was the one that I got the best feel for, I had to go and sew on it first though. Good luck...I know how tough it is to make the decision of what to get.

I love my Pfaff. I hope you love yours too. I'm new to serging. I'm intimidated by the speed. I just got some knits from a mama on here that I'm going to attempt to sew something completely w/my serger! Wish me luck!
