Aynone turn prefolds into fitted or contour diapers???

I would really like to have some fitted or contour diapers for this baby due in dec. We will alreasy have bunches of prefolds and I think dh is getting me a serger for christmas, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on turning prefold diapers into fitteds or contours? Will they fit over a large size range? What size would I cut the diaper to?

Thanks for your help!

I did it a long time ago, way before I had a serger and didn't really like the results. But now that I have a serger, I think it would look 'nicer'.

Here is a link to 'Debbi's' site that has how one way to do it:

Here is a link to many diaper sewing resources, you might find other ways or more info:

I would make pre-fitteds out of them. Basically you make them like a fitted, with elastic, but no snaps or velcro. You just use a Snappi to close them. They are super easy, although I've never done them with a serger, just regular sewing. You can add microfleece to them when you make them as a stay-dry liner.

The pattern is the hardest part to get right. I cut up a bunch of old towels and made them into sample diapers to try out the size before I touched my prefolds. If you have a fitted that you like, you can take the elastic out and trace it or try to just stretch it to get an idea of the sizing. If you don't "trim" them (shorten the front) too much, they will fit longer. I have found that they fit about as long as that size prefold (infant 0-3 mos, standard 4-20 mos, toddler 21+ mos).

i had this same idea! i put old recieving blankies on the outside for a cuter look. the pre-folds could also be dyed, tye dye is sooo cute ive seen some. i sewed a wide zig zag stitch through the stretched elastic, it works but takes forever to dry! maybe a loose elastic only tacked at the ends would work better. i also used a big panel of loop fabricon the front and it was tough to get it all through the serger. min e were the ones with blue thread on the ends, i think 'infant' or small. they are layered 6-8-6. i think newborn prefolds are smaller and thinner and wouldnt make so much waste. i had to cut off 2" from one end of mine so they would fit his rise.
id love to see pics....
