How absorbant is t-shirt fabric? w/ PICS

Are old t-shirts really absorbant? I'm making a couple fitteds out of two old shirts. The soaker layer only has six layers of cotton. I hope this is okay. (They'll be for at -home use, and we EC, so we should be okay.)

What is your experience with t-shirts?

My sister said the best soaker I ever made for her was from 8 layers of a thin old gap t-shirt, with 2 layers of terry. If it's thicker material, you should be fine with 6.

Oh, well, mine's probably not absorbant enough. darn. I hate making doublers!

Ahhh, either way, he (and the diper) are totally adorable! I love tye dyed stuff!

I cleaned out my closet yesterday and am going to sew up some 'funky' t-shirts into dipers, as I think that's a great idea!

I'd not worry, just use it more for a 'day' diaper that you usually change more often (if you don't want to mess with a doubler) and put on a good wrap (I hate when you have to put a wrap over such a cute diaper!)

I've been known to just use the diaper and let them play on a thick towel/blanket for a period of the day just to avoid using a wrap! (This is when they small and not crawling off though!

Don't forget, even though the soaker is only six layers of cotton, the DIAPER is two more layers of cotton, which makes it eight layers total.

I use old t-shirts all the time, often for gifts for friends who really can't afford NOT to cloth diaper...and I wouldn't otherwise be able to provide them with a "stash." Neither I nor any of the mamas to whom I have given a bunch of "recycled" (recycled meaning the fabrics turned into dipes, not that the dipes have been used as dipes before)dipes have had problems with lack of absorbancy. THAT said, I always put them through a few washes with vinegar in the wash and rinse to strip off any fabric softener that may be there (especially if they're donated shirts/fabrics) to hinder absorption.

However absorbant they are, he is SO CUTE!!! That diaper is very cute. If it's not enough, fold up a 14x14 piece of cloth and stick it in there too. Add 3 more layers, but dries fast.

Thank you for the compliments! I think he's pretty cute, myself!

And, actually, the soaker is only 4 layers, so the entire thing is six layers total-- oops! And of course he pooped as soon as I had it on, didn't even get to pee in it yet!
