These are based on a couple things I learned recently. First, an assertation was made that if you set out a plate of butter and a plate of margarine, the flies will flock to the butter and ignore the margarine. What a great experiment that would be!
The second assertation that I read was that plants will grow faster and better in a terracotta pot than a plastic pot. Another great experiment.
A few more ideas: Put out a bowl of breastmilk and a bowl of formula and see which the flies prefer.
Put out an organic hamburger and a pesticide and hormone laden hamburger and see what the flies (or your pet) prefer.
Offer your pet filtered water and tap water and see which it prefers.
