Tired of arguments

So what is the best way to deal with silly stuff that teenagers want to argue with their parents about? Any advice anyone? Dh and I let sd18 get us so worked up it's ridiculous. Most of the hurtful things she says aren't even true!! :

if it's silly things, why not let her have her way?

lol, don't let it get to you.

Sounds simple, and it is. You admit that it's silly little things, and that you let it bug you. So stop.

Try and think real quick before you respond "Is this worth it?". If the answer is a big old *no* then just let the situation be.

Well the short answer is: stop arguing.

Communicate your feelings as respectfully as possible and let that be that. I know it's often easier said than done. Just calmly state what you think and let them know you'd appreciate respect (not necesarily agreement) in return.

A book that really helped me communicate better with my kids (though not yet teens) is "Kids are Worth it" by Barbara Colorosso.

But, yes, like a PP said, Model and demand respectful speech in return...not agreement, not emotion of your choice, but respectful communication....
