Required immunizations are defined as those specified by law. However, most health departments and physicians would recommend more than the required doses.
Why they would recommend more, I am not sure.

TriHibit

You'll find Trihibit on the list at this link:

Because the minimum state requirements are usually less than the federal recommendations. Pediatricians do whatever the AAP and CDC tells them to do, so they follow the recommendations.

Because that list doesn't include Prevnar, hep A or hep B.

Hep B was included

Hep B was not included for the preschoolers - which I guess would be great for parents planning on delaying that one.

Quote:
Age of Child Number of Doses Required

2-3 months 1 DTP/DtaP/DT, 1 Polio, 1 Hib
4-5 months 2 DTP/DtaP/DT, 2 Polio, 2 Hib
6-11 months 3 DTP/DtaP/DT, 2 Polio, 3 Hib
12-15 months 4 Hib*, and 1 MMR given on or after the first birthday
12-18 months 4 DTP/DtaP/DT, 3 Polio, and 1 Varicella
4-6 years 4 or more DTP/DtaP/DT, 4 Polio, 4 Hib*, 1 Varicella, and 2 MMR given on or after the first birthday

Just jumping in to say that I'm learning a lot from this thread. Thanks -- I look forward to reading more!

We delayed all vaxes until the 9 months before dd and ds (4) were to start preschool. I then found out what was specifically required for preschool, which varied from what the ped's schedule was. Then we got them their vaxes every couple of months until we were caught up. We also split up the MMR.

As for ds2 (age 20 mos. and still BFing), we will do the same thing except I think I will be getting him HiB + Prevnar starting this fall.

FTR, only one (1) dose of Hib is recommended for a child 15+ months.

Regarding Prevnar, for children 12-23 months, they recommend 2 doses. For children 24+ months, only one dose.

Here has been my schedule for my littlest one-
6 months-Hib and PCV
9 months-Hib and DTaP
Thats all we have done so far. I am still trying to figure out what to do next, but I think all we will be doing is the DTaP for quite some time. I am not planning on doing all the vaccines. I wont be doing Hep B until she is older, no MMR, no polio, no CP, no flu shots, no Hep A, etc. I have researched all of the diseases and the only one's I am really concerned at all with is pertussis, Hib and PCV. I cant remember for sure, but if Hib and PCV are not required of older children, I probably wont be doing those either.
I would love to 'submit' a plan for people to give your opinion on. I too am really only concerned about PCV, pertussis and Hib. I'm wondering if it'd be good to start this plan at 4 months b/c it's fall/winter, or if I should wait until 6 months to start (and thus knock everything back 2 months). I'm not really sure how much protection 1 shot is anyway, but I assume it's better than nothing. She's not had any vaxes except the Hep B at birth (we hadn't thought about not vaxing at that point, and hadn't done any research). I figure we'll finish that one off later if we end up taking a trip with her to the Phillipines (where Hep B might actually be an issue).

4 months - HIB (1)/DTaP (1)
6 months - Prevnar (PCV) (1)
8 months - HIB(2)/DTaP (2)
10 months - Prevnar (PCV) (2)
12 months - TriHiBit (DTaP(3), Hib(3))
15 months - Prevnar (PCV) (3)
4+ - DTaP(4)

Tell me if there's something obvious here that I could cut out and still vax (obviously if I didn't want to vax, I wouldn't). I am both trying to minimize the number of doses and the number of individual shots w/o sacrificing immunity.

They have a big thing going right now in WA state about pertussis. According to them it takes five doses of DTaP to be "fully" protected against whooping cough. Maybe you've done research that tells you four doses is enough. Just pointing out the possible obvious (about 5 doses being recommended), since you are worried about pertussis and that vax isn't known for being the best one they have.
hmmm... The CDC schedule said that if the 4th dose is after 4 years old, then you don't need 5, which is the only reason why I skipped the 5th dose. I assumed that meant that she'd be as protected as you would be if you had 5 doses. I mean, I know she can't really be "fully" protected, vax or no vax. Also, what do you mean by "that vax isn't known for being the best one they have"? Aren't the DTaP vaxes the only ones that will vaccinate for pertussis since there's none that are JUST for that?

ETA: By the way, who's "they" in Washington? Just curious if it was the state health dept or some other entity.

Well, I changed my mind again. Now I've gone from 1) Never put any thought into vaxing (as in I'd just do what a doc told me to do), to 2) Not vaxing, to 3) possibly selectively vaxing, and now back to 4) Not vaxing.

Argh I'm a scientist and this isn't the place to debate vax vs no vax, but I wish parenting in general wasn't full of decisions that I really am afraid I'm going to screw up. Who let me be a parent???:

My tentative schedule:

18 mos - Hib
20 mos - IPV (#1)
22 mos - Hep A (#1)
24 mos - Prevnar
26 mos - Hep B (#1)
28 mos - DTaP (#1)
30 mos - IPV (#2)
32 mos - Hep B (#2)
34 mos - DTaP (#2)
36 mos - MMR
38 mos - Hep A (#2)
40 mos - Hep B (#3)
42 mos - DTaP (#3)
44 mos - IPV (#3)
48 mos - DTAP (#4)
60 mos - MMR (#2)

Varicella at age 12 if not contracted by then. Also of note, I plan on taking DD to Vietnam with me to adopt a little sister, sometime around 42 months of age (or older) so want her covered on Hep A & B, polio and a start on MMR by then - I wouldn't do those so urgently otherwise.

Lol...it's ok.
Just slow down. Take it one disease/vax at a time. Maybe start with the diseases you're most inclined to vax for or the ones you're least. If you're really worried, start with the diseases that scare you the most.
We all felt overwhelmed for a while.
Knowledge is power, though.
