How would you find a tutor?

Where would you go to find a tutor for an elementary age child? I am very interested in tutoring kids and I live right across from a school, but I don't know how to advertise that service.

And what would you consider a fair price?

Well, it depends. If my child exhibited a need for which the school was going to provide an IEP and tutoring service, I would use their list of tutors that were certificated by the state so that the school would pay for it. If it was tutoring for something "extra", I'd probably post to my local mom's group to see if there was anyone who specialized in the area I needed tutoring in. I would expect to see a resume and clearances. I'd think $15/hour for a tutor with no special qualifications (like someone with a BA but no specific experience), and $25-$50 depending on qualifications for someone with specialized knowledge. My DH occasionally offers tutoring in Calculus or for SAT's (he's a HS AP Calc teacher) and he charges $25/hour, and that is very much on the low end around here.

I would check with your childs teacher.

i've seen ads in the library or the pennysaver. i think i was getting paid about $12 an hour to tutor (elementary/middle school) a couple years ago. plus, it was in home so i had to drive to the families' houses. i definately think what i was getting paid was low, especially since teachers here in NY make a TON. (this year, teachers with no experience and just a BA and certification can make just under $40,000 a year. i saw on the NC website that a teacher with the same qualifications makes about $28,000 a year.)

so i'd say at least $15 an hour, especially if its in home. most kids cant focus for more than an hour. and you have your time and gas driving there and back home.

You can check at any local universities as well. A lot of times the education students tutor for extra money.

I'm in the triangle area too so I hope that this helps out. I have my Masters in Special Ed and did some tutoring on the side.

Go directly to the school system and get your name out there. The school counselors and teachers are constantly giving parents the names of tutors.

I charged $15-18 an hour but that was six years ago and people considered that low at the time. I worked mainly with middle school students.

Also, you can go to your local University and tutor there. They are usually looking for people in their learning lab.

A word of advice-get paid up front. I was way too nice about the whole thing and often taken advantage of. Parents would forget and I wasted all of that prep time and commuting time for nothing.

It can be a great way to bring in a bit of income.

Over the summer I had a tutor for my 11 yr old.

I actually found her by putting a post up on freecycle.

She did charge for tutoring in house, but it was free if she met with my son at the library.

when I was looking for a tutor for my dd I first asked on my local AP message board. Then I asked dd's teacher and eventually the school secretary gave me a name of someone (that was a tutor but wasn't taking new students) that gave me the name of someone else. she charges $15/hr. dd is only in 1st grade. I don't know what I'd do if it was $25+ . dd goes twice a week.

Tutor prices seem to vary a lot by location. I charge $60 an hour for elementary school students and $70 for high school students, and I am considered an inexpensive tutor in my community. I am a math teacher at a respected school, so non-teachers might make somewhat less.

Most private schools in this area have a list of tutors that they give to interested parents--if you called around (or sent a resume), they would probably put you on the list.

I'm a cerified teacher (K-6) and have been paid $65 for a once-weekly session (45 minutes to an hour).

Honestly, I feel kind of weird charging that much, but that's what tutors get around here.
