Here's what I want:
-free (no separate web host required, either)
-ability to password protect individual posts

Does such a place exist?

Vox.com is new and pretty.

I think it's still invite-only. PM me your email address for an invite.

Not going to happen.

However on LJ (or DJ or GJ or journalfen since they're all the same) you can make them "friends only" which means only approved people on your list could read them. And you can filter them so that only CERTAIN people can read them.

Vox is shaping up to be much MUCH nicer than LJ though, I love it.

I use Xanga (a lot of other MDC moms do too, there's a whole ring of us). It has a feature you can use to make posts public, protected (only some people can see them, you add them to the list) or private (only you can see them). You can also make it so that only other people who are Xanga members can view the public posts. You have the option of the free site (what I have right now, see the "me" link) or a paid site (which is I think $25 a year) with no ads. HTH!
