what if the peds office changes vax manufacturers in the middle of the series?

I was just reading about this on a CDC site (http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00048610.htm)

"Whenever feasible, the same brand of DTaP vaccine should be used for all doses of the vaccination series. Data do not exist regarding the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of using DTaP vaccines from different manufacturers for successive doses of the primary or booster vaccination series. However, the vaccine provider may not know or may not have available the type of DTaP vaccine previously administered to a child. Neither circumstance should present a barrier to administration of the vaccine and any of the licensed DTaP vaccines may be used to complete the vaccination series."

My DS has had one DTaP shot (6 months ago), and I was going to get him a second dose, but the ped's office is now using Daptacel from Aventis Pasteur rather than the GSK manufactured vax that DS was given initially.

Does anyone have any info on using different manufacturers for the primary shot series? I guess from the above quote there has been no research done on this topic, but maybe someone knows of some links that I can check out??

TIA!!!

I've never heard of such a thing. There's frightening little research at all into that topic. What does your doctor say about it ? Does he know ?

The dr. said that the various DTaP vaxes are interchangeable, and that they don't ever know which stock (manufacturer) the state is going to supply them with, that they are always changing, and that they haven't worried about that.

Still, it concerns me from the standpoint of no studies have been done at all (says this also on the package insert), on whether or not kids will produce the desired immune response if not given the same type of shot each time.

I will probably do it, though, because I am very worried about pertussis.

Really there are very few studies done on vaccine safety at all, so this is no different.

Please search pertussis on the main forum too Or feel free to post your concerns about it.

You could check with your local health dept too to see what they carry.
