AAACK. Went to get DD her MMR at the age of two and....

We delayed the MMR until DD turned 2 and yesterday was her 2 year check up. My convo with the nurse was interesting, she was training a new nurse on how to use their computer system and the new nurse was typing in the info... N=nurse... NN-new nurse

N to me: "OOO, I see you need to get vaxes".
Me: "Yes. We chose to delay our vaccines. We will only be doing the MMR today."
Nto NN (in a whisper that I could barely hear): "Type in MMR and varicella"
Me: "um NO... we will NOT be doing the CP vax today."
N: "oh"

The wench tried to SNEAK a vax in! Now I can understand if she started the "blah, blah, immunizations are important" crap.. or tried to talk me into something but to SNEAK a vax in?

I was appalled.

And yup, I am informing the ped!

that. is. horrible.

for your vigilance and taking a stand.

ita you should report this to her supervisor.

Wow. Just wow.

And I didn't think I could get any more cynical about people in the medical profession.

That's horrible! It's definately a good thing you were keeping an eye on them!

Here on our military base, they have a seperate immunization clinic. We sign in and then they call us back and if I see the syringe is already filled, I'll refuse it. I have to see the vial and then watch them fill the syringe with that immunization I came for.
I bet they'll always remember me as a pain in their side!lol

This is a good time to remind everyone to check the bottles just prior to administration of each individual injection to make sure your child is getting the correct vaccine.

Anyone bringing their child to the ped for the MMR vaccine, should be aware that you may walk out of there with your child actually having received the newly licensed MMRV vaccine.

MMRV = measles, mumps, rubella and varicella

This scenerio is going to become commonplace. Unfortunately though, most parents are going to have a nurse on autopilot rather than a nurse with a trainee by her side. This situation is similar to what we've been hearing about Tdap. People are taking themselves or their children into ER's for the tetanus vaccine and they are being told they are getting a "tetanus shot," but are walking out with Tdap.

lerlerler - I would double check your child's records and request the lot number if you don't already have it.

I would have turned the vaccines down from that office given that you can not trust to get what you ask for. Perhaps a note to a nurses board would be in order.Ofcourse, behind doors I am sure the nurse will get a pat/thubs up for trying to give your child much needed vaccines!

I would make a complaint about the entire practice. The nurse is pushing MMRV because the doctor wants to use up his stock so he doesn't lose money. I'm sure the attempted "switch" was based on "doctor's orders."

You have a mother who specifically said MMR only and the nurse was going to give MMRV. For the nurse to feel comfortable doing what she did, her confidence had to have come from the top.

I'm sure it's not the first time she's done it. If a parent were to make a stink (after the fact), the nurses would be instructed to send the doctor right in for the "you need the CP vax too" damage control talk and all would be well once the doc got to the parent. By the end of "the talk," the parent would be thanking the nurse for making that little mistake.

What a dumb a$$ she is. Who whispers that crap IN FRONT of the patient? Thank goodness for you she was stupid.

Geez. And then the medical profession wonders why ppl are cynical and no longer trust them.

I'd be complaining to whomever would listen!!!!!!!! That's just ... such an abuse of position.

.
This is what I do. Prior to the immunization I pull out my notebook and ask for the Manufacturers name, name of the vax, lot # and exp. date. If they don't "show" it to me but just read it off I act like I didn't hear and move in closer to actually read the stuff for myself.

Oh, I'd be FLAMING!! Good thing you heard her!

For me it isn't the vax's themselves that get me riled up, but the attitude from the medical profession. Whether it be telling parents they "have to" get the vaccines or trying to sneak them in, it just gets me all fired up!

I would have freaked out!!
Hummm, so do you know for sure she was only given the MMR and not the MMRV? Did you check on the lot #?

I checked.. Only the MMR... In addition, a nurse diagnosed her with the CP about 6 months ago based on a few pox looking spots. I TOTALLY don't believe that is what it was, I think it was a sunscreen reaction - but I reminded the nurse that according to them, Ellie already HAD the CP. SO she didn't argue with me after that.

The official chart says "MMR" followed by the date AND "CP diagnosed 6/06"
What did the doctor say when you told him what she did?
It might also have been that the nurse is used to giving MMR and CP at the same time cause they're both usually done at 12 mo. I think some of them just work on autopilot. They don't just tune out what mom is saying, they ignore doctors orders too.

That happened to us at a military hospital. My dd's 12 mo WBV and even though the doctor's orders on the computer screen in front of the nurse said X, nurse just proceeded to line up the 'usual' 12 mo shots. Lucky I'd read on here about checking. The nurses response when I pointed the wrong vials out was "well this is what we usually do at 12 mo". She didn't even look apologetic.

i would try to find a different practice. what other shady things could they be doing? the training nurse must be pretty high up among the nurses to be training the new one. i guess i just wouldnt trust that practice anymore or at least be a lot more aware next time i'm there (if you cant find anyone else in your area who is ok with delayed vax, that accepts your insurance, etc)
With my second dd I delayed (now we don't vax at all). She got shots every 6 months. When she was 18 months she needed 6 month series. The damn tech injected her with MMR, and did not tell me what it was until she was already pushing the plunger down in the syringe! That was one I wanted to wait a lot longer on. They are sneaky, and will get them in any way they can.
You need to call your state's regulatory agency and report this practice, and specifically this nurse. She tried to perform a medical procedure on your child against your wishes. She is a danger to others. Report them NOW!
