I think if you aren't doing fertility treatments, most doctors don't want to bother doing ultrasounds to count/measure egg folicales. However, you can get blood work done to check all of your hormone levels. My doctor says she can tell from my hormone levels that I am ovulating. And my insurance did cover the test. Its done on a certain day of your cycle.

Peace,

I think the Clomid challenge test can also give them information about where you are with regard to ovarian reserve. I am not sure if insurance covers that - I think it depends on your insurance company. Mine will not cover anything remotely related to fertility now, but will cover some of my meds, like lupron. Go figure.

Yep, you can get a progesterone test seven days after you are supposed to ovulate (the test is generally done day 21 of a 28 day cycle) and the levels will tell the doctor if you ovulated or not.

I can't say anything about insurance, but we have starting doing vaginal ultrasounds on CD11/12 to see how the eggs are doing. At that time they count the eggs & see how big they are (ie: how soon they'd release on their own). After this, I get a shot of ovidrel & then 36 hours later a shot of sperm
So, yes, there are things out there which can be used to check how may eggs & their size.
I have no idea what your doctor did before when he told you that you only had 3-4, etc. But yes, as pp said, there are ways to check if you have ovulated that cycle too.
Good luck!
