question about sewing

Hi I'm totally new to sewing and am trying to make some training pants for dd (just sewing pads into underwear). My question is this: How do you "end it", meaning, when you're done or your thread is ending, how do you tie it off? I've just been kind of tieing a little knot and they kind of stick out. I wonder if there's a better way to do this? I hope this is clear....

My machine has a lever to push that makes it go backwards, called backstitching. At the beginning, go about an inch, backstitch the inch and then continue on. At the end, backstitch an inch and then go back forward again.

ETA: Then you can clip the thread all the way down to the fabric without it unravelling.

Your sewing machine should have a reverse (lol sounds like I'm talking about a car... or maybe I'm just tired lol ) I just sew in reverse a couple stiches then forward to where I started then snip. HTH

i don't have a sewing machine.
do I just stitch back right over the stitches? Or right next to them?

yes, you can do the same thing without a machine!
just stitch backward a few stiches, then forward, then back, then forward again and clip your thread!

the goal is just to get that thread woven in there really good so it won't come loose.

ETA: you can sew backwards right along the stitches you've already made (right on top or right beside, doesn't make a difference.)
