Baby name help- last time...I promise!

First and foremost- happy September, mamas!

We are *really* struggling with baby names for a boy. (We are going for the surprise this time around, but odds are it is a boy- it would be the first girl in 27 years on my husband's side of the family

We have a little boy named Quinlan- a family name on my husband's side- many shorten it to "Quinn" but we call him Quinny, Q or Quinlan. Our favorite boy's name by far is Finlay- we love it; but just aren't sure about the rhyming nicknames. So I need honesty, ladies- if others shorten both to Quinn and Finn- is that just too much?

Please, please, please let me know what you really think- I am so torn about this one!

If you like it I say go for it, but since you're asking I do think it sounds a bit silly with the nicknames.

I think it's great! You don't need to shorten it (I know people will probably do it anyway...).

We had Quinn as an option and also Duncan. I love Finlay though!

I love it. I wouldn't worry too much about the nicknames. Both of our girls have different nicknames for our girls than we "planned" to use. One has absolutely nothing to do with her name.

I like it too... But both of those names were on my "boy's list" just not DHs list.

I love Finlay! I don't like nicknames so it took me a min to get the Quinn & Finn thing. I think it's silly, but that may just be my nickname bias. I say if you like Finlay & want to avoid Quinn & Finn, just remind people that his name is not Finn it is Finlay.

Your kids will only live together for 18 years or so. The rest of their lives, they will be more or less on their own and it won't matter that their nicknames rhyme.

Honestly? I wouldn't do it.

But I'm not a fan of rhyming names for twins or anything like that, either.

If you LOVE it, go for it!

I love the name Finlay and I'm having a similar problem. We are thinking about the name Finley, but I like the nickname Finn with 2 "n's", but wasn't thinking about spelling it Finnley. Do you plan on adding the extra "n" only when it is shortened?

Also, what is your opinion on Finley with our last name, Austin. When his name is shortened it would be Finn Austin...ugh, rhyming. Does this just sound too crazy??

I think Finn and Quinn is cute. Plus, you never know what they will actually want to go by. Sometimes kids want to be called by their given name and others like a nickname.

Sorry it's taken me forever to reply, sleepypeanutsmom. I love your daughter's name- Ainsley was on our girl's list as well I think Finley/Finnley Austin sounds fabulous! And in terms of Finley vs. Finnley...my son's name, Quinlan, only has one "n" but we call him Quinn for short. I don't think the formal name has to have both "n"s to shorten it to Finn.

Hope you are enjoying the last few weeks of your pregnancy- our baby is due tomorrow and I am so anxious to meet him or her!!

No, I wouldn't do the nicknames that sound alike thing. They are not twins and I wouldn't do it to twins either. Our childhood nicknames stay with us forever, so the 18 year thing that a previous poster mentioned is bogus.

Love the name, I would definately say go for it!

Thanks for your thoughts, mamas! I think we have finally narrowed our boys names down to Finlay August or Cavan Kinsley (which is where we were 4 months ago, go figure...) And if he is a boy, which I suspect he is, we'll just have to see if he is a Cavan or a Finlay.

Thanks for your post, quinbearzmama! I really appreciate the support with using Finley but adding the extra "n" when we shorten it.

Yay on your due date tomorrow! I hope everything goes smoothly whenever it happens!

Not in your DDC but wanted to say that I think it is cute. It is not their given names that rhyme so I wouldn't worry about it. Like a PP said you never know what you will actually call them in the end.
