I always thought I'd homeschool, but it's looking like I'm going to have to work full time, and I don't know if I'll have it in me to homeschool the way I want to. My main objection to 'school' is the grading and testing. Can I exempt my son from all grading and every single test?

No.

Does your state have charter, alternative, or magnet schools? If you can find a public school that uses the waldorf method there won't be grading. They will still have to take the yearly NCLB test though.

QoftheP: Our local Friends school and a couple of non-religious private schools do not test/grade. They do project-based work and portfolios. Montessori does not grade/test either. One charter school here does not test/grade except for end of year testing rqed by NCLB.

Can you look around for the closest match to your hs philosphy?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to find an alternative school. But aren't they expensive? I wonder if there is a Friends school, I've been to our Quaker meetings a few times, and I love Quaker philosophy.

I haven't been able to find any alternative schools near me. I'm kind of in the boonies.

I guess testing is OK, as long as DS's tests aren't graded. I have a religious objection to evaluating, grading, and ranking people. Does anyone think a public school district would be able to accomodate not grading a child?

No. It's just not going to happen- sorry. I taught in a school district and school that were known for being accomodating of special requests and the such. We had many very active, informed parents. No way no how could not grading have been implemented for a child. Now many districts and schools don't grade at the younger grades these days- sometimes up to 3rd grade. But beyond that- and in schools that don't do that- you're going to be SOL.
