For me personally it hurt like a ^%$#@! Omigod, horrible intense cramping. Not gonna lie to you, others have felt nothing so it does vary. That being said I am glad I had it done. Take some pain reliever before hand and bring pad with for on your way home. Good luck.

I am such a tense person - i am wondering if maybe i should have a glass of wine first :

I would go for the small bottles of liquor myself...

I remember yelling out that if it turned out DH had a low sperm count I was going to be pi$$ed.. The Dr. and nurse started laughing. It was kinda neat to see everything and get the results right away. We were told to go home, fool around, and see what happens... still waiting for something to happen...

Its hurts for sure but at least its a quick procedure. I had mine about 3 years or so ago I guess, gosh doesnt seem that long ago! Anyways, I described it as presurre going up and comming down all at the same time if that makes sense. I felt kinda sick on my stomach for a few hours after it and I spotted of course but up and feeling normal the next day.

I was really worried b/c I had heard such horror stories - but it really wasn't bad. I'm sure the 800mg of motrin i took beforehand - helped.
Good Luck.

Mine was probably the worst pain I have ever felt (including a natural childbirth). Intense cramping, and the days after, ouch, it was bad...but, all that said...we got pg the same month and now have DS.

It doesnt take very long, all of a few minutes, but I had one big OUCH, enough to lift me off the table. But, it really is neat to watch.

I was given a valium to take before hand, along with motrin. To do it again, I would certainly need a big bottle of wine, along with double the valium and motrin!!

My cervix was incred closed tight and my uterus is extremely retroverted. Tubes were clear, and I think the pain I was in was due to the position of my insides and having to force open a cervix that had never been touched!

I wish you the best of luck!! And get busy soon after!!

ETA - I LOVE your siggy!! I "used" part of it the other day to a complete stranger who gave me a unnecessary comment about NIP.

My HSG wasn't bad at all, just a little uncomfortable, but I know it is different for everyone. Depends on the dr. doing the procedure maybe?

Anyway, I hope yours goes smoothly and you have a magic cycle right after!!

my HSG was after my first 2 mc's, and numerous IUI's, but before I had experienced child birth. It was very painful for me, I was not well educated about what to expect, and had not taken any pain meds. The tech doing the HSG was a very brusk man. I lay very still silently crying and he kept shouting at me that I was crying for nothing, and that it did not hurt. : Results were not imediately available, it turns out I had a bit of "cobwebs" so that was probably the pain. (I had an explorative laproscopy the next month)If I had known how I would feel I would have had my hubby drive me to the appt. I was not up to the 1 hr. drive home, so I spent the rest of the day on the beach. I felt like I had been hit by a truck.
So if I had it to do again :

Pain meds, a driver, and a big maxi

I had my hsg last week, and I haven't had a vaginal birth, just 1 cs. I was told to take 800mg of ibuprofen, and to take 800mg of tylenol that afternoon. I was also very worried about it, because I tend to have anxiety about any kind of vaginal exam/procedure. I just kept trying to focus on what it would look like on the screen, and how it might open everything up instead of thinking about how much it might hurt. My experience wasn't horrible, but then again, I was expecting it to be really bad. My best friend didn't think much about the procedure ahead of time, thought it would be no big deal, and it side-lined her. The cramps were bad enough afterwards that I was glad I had dh to drive me home. I can't imagine how bad they'd have been if I hadn't taken all the ibuprofen! They were very very intense. I've been achey/crampy since it happened, but I've been experiencing abdominal distention/discomfort constantly for months now, so it's not much different. I asked for different doctor than the one who'd recommended the procedure, and although I was very nervous about it since I'd never met him, he was wonderful. The nurse was an angel who was very tender and caring, too.

I hope yours turns out to be "not as bad" for you too!

Kristen

I had absolutely no pain at all, not even uncomfortable. The only thing I took was tylenol. It can really vary from person to person.
