Afraid Midwife not going to sign off on Birth Center

Ok, I believe my diagnositic US came up with a 2 vessal cord (has clearly written on it 2V CI).

Last visit (at 33 weeks) I mentioned I stupidly left the birth center paperwork in the car for them to fill out. She kind of brushed me off saying I can get it at next visit, which is 35 weeks...this is paperwork they have to sign off on. If they don't do it at my next visit, I cannot use the birth center, as all paper work has to be turned in by 36 weeks-37 weeks. I have a feeling that they are not going to sign off on it until the results from my next US are in.

They are being kind of not forthcoming with information right now. All I was told by the OB/Midwife group's nurse was that they wanted to do a "fetal growth" scan at 35 weeks (4 weeks after my diagnostic US) and wanted to check the left hand because all the could see were four knuckles and a thumb, since the baby's hand was in a fist. When asked why a "fetal growth" scan, it was basically down played and said it was just to check the left hand...but I figured for that, they would just do a quick run in with their lesser used machine (normally used to check position if they suspect breach) not a full blown US appointment with the US tech.

Which, means, we are going to be scrambling for a homebirth (which I would be happy with), because I haven't been able to get DH on board to even talk to people about it, so it would probably be a UC.

I am not even sure if I could get the needed supplies in that short of a time..or where to even look to start getting them, or what I would even need.

What you would need for a UC? Totally depends on you mama. All you really need is a vagina and a baby! I think there are some threads in the UC section you could look up specifically.

What you need would depend how much you care about the appearance of your sheets and carpet, I suppose!

Why on earth would anyone do an ultrasound to check on a hand? Especially the hand that is non-dominant for most people? Even if there were something wrong with it, plenty of people go through life just fine with only one complete hand. It sounds so bogus, I can't believe they couldn't at least trump up something better.

Out of curiosity, is there anything about a 2-vessel cord that makes birth itself riskier? Or is it all in the pregnancy?

I was following a thread on here a while back about something very similar- US showed a 2V cord (twice if I remember correctly) but when the baby was born it was a "normal" 3V cord. I'm sure if you did a search you could find it and talk to that mama...

Good luck. I hope you have the birth you want!

I have heard ALOT irl about these 2 vessel cords etc? Anyone care to explain this? What is it what does it mean?

Good luck to you mama!

Basically an Umbilical cord is supposed to have 3 vessals to it. I believe it is 2 arteries and 1 vein. In a 2 vessal cord there is only one of each.

There are, if you believe the research out there, tons of horrible things that this can cause, the less traumatizing of which are IUGR (Intra uterine growth retardation) and pre-term labor. Some of the more catastrophic things are still birth, major and multiple birth defects affecting all systems of the body, trisomy disorders, kidney problems...etc.

Just do a google search of 2 vessal cord and you will pull up all the horrible stuff.

Hugs mama.... I can not imagine what you are going thru.

Will it affect labor at all- ?

Personally, I'd go for the UC.

But, you should put them on the spot and point blank ask them about the 2V cord and signing the papers. You should know way before hand and not have to wait until the last minute. They should have told you right away. Drs or MWs have no right to with hold information about YOU from YOU.

From my google search, it looks as though all might not be lost-- the fetal growth scan might tell them "everything's fine, proceed with the birth center plans" as well as "there is xyz problem here, don't proceed with the birth center" in which case you will have a decision to make. But I agree, pin them down as to what their thoughts are. There is no reason for you to be in the dark.

This is awful! Why are they treating you like a medical condition? Ah well. That's the way of things, I guess.
BUT you can refuse these interventions or will they drop you if you do not comply?
Do they allow informed refusal?

Erg.

I did at my 33 week visit ask why they were doing another US to check fetal growth. She looked at my chart for a few minutes...then mentioned something about checking left hand (which I already knew the tech wasn't able to see because I was right there and we were joking about it). It was more of a blow off type of answer, in thought, than a true answer. I already knew this baby was potentially going to be big, both my previous children were as well (DS1 born 42w 5 d at 9 pounds 2 ounces 23 inches; DS2 born at 42 w exactly at 9 pounds 15 1/2 ounces 22 inches)...at US they gestimated weight at over 4 pounds, with baby measuring on average 2 w 5 d ahead.

I also said something about I felt stupid because I forgot the birth center papers in the car, and was basically told they could deal with it at my next apt. You have to turn in the papers between 35 and 36 weeks, so they have all the signed forms at the birth center on hand by the time you are 37 weeks in case you go into labor at 37 weeks.

The problem is, if they decided to wait on the results of the US, I will be 36 weeks when they sign the form....and not able to have scheduled my apt. with the birth center to turn everything in. Last US it took them a week for the OB to review the results and call on it. The scan was done on a Tues. at 31week, I got the call about wanting to schedule one at 35 weeks the following Monday late in the afternoon. The OB is only in the office like 1 day a week...the rest of the time it is the Midwifes in his office. Which means I will be 36 weeks or a few days further along when I go in again, before they sign (if they wait for the results).

Thanks for the support. I am not worried about any of the potential problems. I did the Nuchal, even though I do have a 1 in 8300 chance, of Trysomy 13/18 I feel fine. The heart looked good on the US, and so did the kidneys, they also didn't see a cleft palate or lip...
