Yes, Dear

Grrrr. I just saw the breastfeeding episode. Here is a recap of what it is about.

Quote:
Greg, Kim, Jimmy and Christine are horrified to see a mother nursing her walking, talking toddler at the park. Greg wonders what's the proper cutoff age for breast-feeding. Kim says about a year, and she couldn't wait to stop nursing after that. But that night, she screams at Greg to get out of the baby's room when he catches her off guard still nursing Sam. Greg thinks she hasn't stopped breast-feeding because she can't sever ties to her son, but Kim confesses she does it so she can have big, milk-filled boobs. Greg convinces her to start weaning Sam now before she's got a walking, talking toddler asking her to breast-feed him at the park, but no matter what he tries, Sam won't take to bottles. When Greg's just about ready to give up, Jimmy tells him how he got Dominic and Logan to wean; he'd dress up like Christine with a bottle shoved under her clothes and pretend to be Mommy. It works like a charm, after which Greg finds out that Jimmy made the whole story up. The next night, Kim catches Greg off guard while he's feeding Sam this way -- and he screams at her to get out.
In the episode, they talked about circumcision which is an incosietency in the show. Because I remember in another episode they talked about how their boy wasn't circumsized.
It's just a heartbreaking episode. The little boy was crying for his mom and she totally ignored his needs. The dad is trying to convince her not to BF saying it's the best thing.

soooooo, sad.

why is walking talking inappropriate?

but a bottle is fine? its fine for a walking talking toddler to be emotionally attached to a bottle or pacifier at 3, but ***oh no*** heaven forbid they be attached to the mother!!!!!

Yeah, I saw that episode before.

DH was watching that episode yesterday. I walked downstairs and DH immediately said "You're not allowed to watch this episode!" It made me sad. One thing confused me, though. It was mentioned several times that he was over one year, so why was he getting formula anyway?

I missed the circ reference - can someone tell me what was said?

yeah, I saw that episoide a while ago. one of the reasons I stopped watching. thier baby is just barely a year and she felt embarresed about nursing him at night (thats the same episoide right?). but for some reason giveing him a bottle of formula in the middle of the night is soooo much better

I don't actually remember what they said about circ. But it was implied that the boy was circ'ed.

I saw that for the first time recently. I was really shocked. Four intelligent adults making such ignorant comments about breastfeeding. I wanted to kill Greg for telling her she had to stop. Why would they wean onto a bottle anyhow?

Yeah, I never understood why it's okay to have a bottle but not a boob!

Yeah, I've seen that episode twice in the last few weeks. :

maybe we could complain to whatever TV station plays those reruns...I know other types of episodes have gotten pulled that way. (I remember hearing about an episode of Will and Grace that the AFA got pulled : )

I REALLY dislike this show

I think that episode is very old, a few years? I agree it's awful, but at least they were breastfeeding on tv...so exposure is better than none and doing it for year is better than not doing it at all...but mainstream tv has to stay mainstream right? Think about all the sponsors of the show, they can't have a sitcom going against the marketing of formula...I guess...

There's breastfeeding on Dharma and Greg!

Dharma's mom breastfeeds her baby (Dharma's little brother). Not sure how long though.

I hate the title of that show... it is so condescending. If my husband ever says "Yes, Dear" to me, he better be ready to head for the hills afterwards! So I have never watched this show, but it sounds *awful*. I hate that our society is so accepting of a) being condescending to women, b) the idea that married people hate each other or just "tolerate" each other (evidenced in eight zillion sitcoms) and c) the idea that mom doesn't know what's best for baby!

Yeah, I seem to recall them talking about how Dharma nursed into toddlerhood...way past societal norms. Of course it was set up as just one of those "freaky-deaky hippy things that Dharma's mom does" instead of the norm.
