What to do with out of date textbooks, etc.?

Thread Starter
I am trying to reduce the number of books that we have. Does anyone have suggestions for what to do with books that are likely not interesting to anyone? (out of date textbooks, random old books). I know that Goodwill does not want books. I usually take books to Half Price Books, but I am almost certain that they won't want these. Can I recycle them with regular mixed paper recycling? Other ideas? I hate to add them to the landfill.

Library book sales will often take just about anything. worth a try (and good for a tax deduction)

it may depend upon the type of text. We Buy Your Books took a number of our more 'unusual' text books (college, graduate school), and completely disregarded some of our 'classic literature' texts (like Little Women of which we had 3 copies). So far, we've been able to sell about 40-50 books. the rest will be donated and used as a tax deduction.

I donate them to the library or I recycle them. The paperback ones (like study guides) can be recycled but hardcovers can't be.

I've sold a lot of text books before through Amazon - you can just plug in the ISBN and see what they are currently selling the book for or what others are selling it for, then I put it up for a little bit cheaper (if its not like $1) and I have sold a bunch that way. It culls the herd, there will definitely be a bunch you won't sell, but then at least you'll have gotten rid of the useful ones.

i just recently freecycled them. I posted something like

"large box of college texts, history and geology, some older than 2002, some brand new exam copies. Use them, sell them, give them, we don't care. We are college profs and are overwhelmed in books."

I got 14 replies and the books were picked up the same afternoon. Yay freecycle!
