Planning a budget - ideas and tips please!

A friend has asked me to help her budget as her lack of money managing skills has been a major strain on her marriage. She is working to acquire those skills. Dh and I are not in debt and have savings but I have never really "budgeted" just focused on paying down debt early in our marriage and then saving. I don't really check our checking account too much. I could probably save even more but have been busy with three kids.

What are you major methods for bugeting? Do you focus on certain areas, like paying yourself first (saving) and debt repayment or are you much more detailed.

We would both be very interested to hear what works for you, maybe some of your methods will appeal more to her personality. I also need to help her figure out what her priorities are - I think she told me she maxed out her credit cards, so I imagine that's an important area to tackle.

I checked out a book from the library by Dave Ramsey after reading the above thread that really helped me called Financial Peace.

Thanks BabyJ, anyone else with practical suggestions for budgeting other than debt repayment?

I think with budgeting (like with investing), you have to have some goals in mind. What are their goals? A budget has to have a purpose... whether that is to simply pay the bills (live within your means) or to reach a more concrete goal.

My budget focuses more on the quarter than on the month. It helps when you have quarterly expenses like taxes, or biannual or annual expenses like car insurance. Monthly budgeting doesn't work as well for me...my husband gets paid quarterly for some things and so that also is a factor.

I also have a very flexible 5 year budget...it is sort of a 'where do we see ourselves in 5 years?' and helps with major/durable good purchases...what appliances will need to be replaced in the next 5 years? Will you be paying off or getting a car loan in the next 5 years? Will we sell our house/ buy a new one? etc. Important to think about where the money for these things will come from!

I am in agreement with the pp who said that a budget needs to have a goal. It helps me focus, at least!
