Disappointed....Suri

Just watching The Today Show. the Vanity Fair editor was talking about giving the baby bottles

I feel like celebrities have such a huge responsibility and I get so disappointed when they make non-NFL decisions.
there have been pictures taken of Katie wearing a nursing bra....sooo was that just a publicity stunt or what?? Maybe she just pumps to let Tom feed the baby every now and then??
What did the Vanity Fair person actually say? I can think of a number of comments that would just mean that the VF person has a cultural bias that babies get bottles.

She talked about seeing the whole family helping to care for the baby and seeing the siblings giving bottles was one of the things she mentioned.

Ah well, so much for wishful thinking. Could still be EBM though...and if she's got a good supply supplementing with formula won't necessarily kill bf, right? right?

Lots of BF mamas do pump so that DH and/or other kids can feed the baby sometimes. We can at least hope that's what she meant!

My mom bf'd all 5 of us, and we gave our little sisters a formula bottle occasionally. They mostly hated the bottles (big surprise), but it was for her to try to go out for a few hours, or let us try to feed the baby. It wasn't a big deal, and she didn't wean till over a year so it didn't impact bf'ing much.

at least she tried, I guess. most ppl don't make it past 3 months, so it's not surprising, but yeah it's disappointing to me any time a baby doesn't get bf.

considering their touring schedule, EPM in bottles makes sense. so, maybe it is both.

but i don't need to be up in people's business.

Yes, it could be EBM....I guess it is just disappointing that she can't always get it from the tap...I know that would be hard w/ her sorta schedule though. It would just be nice someday if a celebrity like her never even used bottles

I'm guessing formula though. She said something like this, I went in their room at 5:45 and they were getting her out of the crib and you know, giving her a bottle. They all chip in.

yeah.

i think there are unique social demands that we don't understand fully.

i mean, i was with a friend who knows 'someone' who is famous. we went to hang out with my firend's 'famous' friend, and the people hanging around to photograph her was unnerving. seriously unnerving.

we went to her home, there were people outside to take pictures. and then we went in, and i wanted to open the curtains as it was a bit stuffy and she said "no, they'll take pictures through the windows!" we later went out, and between fans coming up for pictures and people outside taking pictures while we were driving, parking, going to dinner, coming out of dinner, going to the club, coming out of the club, going home, back at the home, and then when we left (just my firend and i), there were still people out there!

i dont think it's often about not wanting to BF or NIP, but that there is this constant watching. even if she's in a blanket, there's still watching. It's not comfortable--and i wasn't even the one being watched!

so, i can imagine why she might express and use bottles. it could be more protective than anything else.

I thought what others mentioned, maybe it was EBM in the bottles? Maybe she didn't want to nurse during the photo shoot?

Well, no, it wouldn't necessarily hurt her supply and prevent continued breastfeeding, but formula would alter the intestinal flora, which wouldn't be good for the baby's immune system, future allergies, etc.

but other do not think in such depth as this. Bottle means formula in our culture.

Well, seeing as Tom and Katie have been seen out and about quite a bit without Suri, it's doubtful that she's keeping up a full supply by pumping when away from the baby. Add in Scientology's lack of support for breastfeeding, and I strongly doubt that Suri is breastfed.

(And yes, I did see the clasp of the nursing bra too, so hopefully Suri got a little of the good stuff.)

i saw an interview where they asked Tom- "how do you like feeding her?"
He replied, "Well im not a woman, so i dont get to feed her, i change a lot of diapers". or something similar. He specifically went on to confirm she was bf.

nak... sorry

I've given all of my babies plenty of bottles. Starting at 3 weeks w/ ds1, about 5-6 weeks w/ ds2 and 3. I have never had my supply negatively impacted by either pumping all the time to get the bottle, or from using frozen milk a few times w/ out pumping to make up for the feeding. I have oversupply issues, which are much more common than most people seem to realize. When ds3 was over 8 mos old, I even had dh just give him formula several times when I wasn't there. Especially if I felt like eating something he was allergic to while I was out. None of my babies have even ever had nipple confusion.

And even if they are giving the baby bottles of formula a few times a day, that doesn't mean she's not nursing at all. Plenty of people go back to work, don't pump, but nurse at night while the baby gets formula during the day. I personally wouldn't do that, but I don't mind pumping.

I thought Scientology was against breastfeeding.

If she's getting bottles, it's probably that horrid barley formula that Hubbard came up with:

Its not so much what that particular baby is being fed that bothers me, its the message it sends. The more high profile people breastfeed and its noted through the media the more it normalizesw breastfeeding.

I do think that all babies deserve to be breastfed, including Suri though

btw, I love her name!

There's nothing in Scientology that says "Don't breastfeed." In the 50s, Hubbard did write a book that tiptoed around that and included the barley formula, but that book has been pulled from publication and there is no mention of whether breastfeeding or bottlefeeding or formula is best. And I've seen quite a few babies on Barley formula that had no issues. Their peds had no issues with the Barley formula either. I guess you just have to talk to your ped.

Anyway, I'm a Scientologist and pro-BF too... I guess it's sad that they don't specify whether it's breastmilk or formula, but at least she did it for some time. Some time is better than popping that nice bottle of Enfamil in their mouth at birth.
