Our Kindergarten Orientation

I want to share our experiece today, good and bad:

Bad:

DS freaked. Only kid freaking out. It was awful. Screamed, fought with me, and cried. The same boy who once loved school. Fortunately, BEFORE the major freak out I was able to take teacher aside and explain the bad Headstart experience. The minute I said Headstart her eyes changed and she knew it was a bad thing. I said he should be fine w/o us around.

I knew some of the Moms in passing. This is not all bad, but one I recognized right away from my old job. She always camed in "messed up". (Drugs, etc.) Fine, that was a few years back, times change. Well, leavign she approaches me as DS is freakign otu and said her DD was ok cause she had gone to..HEADTSART! Ugh. I was frustrated and said "So did he, that is why he is like this now. They can go to hell." OOPS. I try to watch what I say and shesays soem her DD relatives work there-oh joy. But then adds she took her DD out due to ringowrm and head lice being caught there and they are trying to close it down (via lawsuit) for some other horrid charges. What a surprise. She asks DS teacher name and I say the one who did most the damage. She says "Ooooh, she should not be a teacher. I used to hang with her if you know what I mean, she should not be in a school!" OMG. And I never said to her that this teacher did the messed up stuff! But it worries me that she has an "associate" parent in DS class.

Bus is scheduled for same time I start work. I want to get him on daily at first. ALTHOUGH looks like the same bus may stop by my work, sooooo.

Good:

Classroom was huge. It had games, a wooden kitchen to play at. Toys. Old fashioned in a good way!

Tons of supplies. Again, this district asks for ZERO supplies (and it is a high income area, although my family is not-it is not income based.) They all have their own folders, boxes, crayons (FAT!!), pencils, glue sticks, and scissors already.

Teacher seems ok. I have to give it more time.

So my anxiety is still quite high. DS was a complete mess-and it was mostly b/c he was afraid AND wanted to go to the playground. Alot was not getting his way with DH and I.

I fear he will fight me when it comes to getting on the bus. It was so much better when DD and he were to be on the same bus (overcrowding led him to a different school than DD! )

Now I have to deal with DD bus stop issues, last year she was being attacked by a little girl. I may have to switch her morning stop to my work too...

I wouldn't be concerend about that other mom. It sounds like perhaps she's straightened out a bit and perhaps she can give the teacher some insight on more of the problems your ds had there.

I am so sorry that your ds was upset and crying. That must have been awful. I am also sorry that your kids are in different schools/on different buses...what a hassle :

Know what caught me off guard? DD has gone to 2 of the 3 schools in our town-this is the 3rd school that DS is attending. (all due to overcrowding issues!) While I allow candy and such at home, I was amazed at the amount of candy and junk DD was given at school-often by teachers. It frustrated me. And PB&J is a common school made lunch. Well, DS school does not allow certain foods, I assume due to allergies since they are not just cake, peanut butter, and nuts-but also ORANGES, PEACHES, and...I forget the last right now. I respect it and such but wouldn't you know i had gone otu and bought already made peanut butter crackers and a nut containing snack for DS prior to the letter?!?! I also got-MANDARIN ORANGES! So I went and got some cheese crackers for now. It was cute when I told DS he cannot bring his favorite PB crackers to school b/c they make some kids sick, he had no issues since it was for that reason! It is truly amazing the differences in schools in the SAME TOWN!

Meanwhile, DD fixed herself a fluffernutter (umm this is a first, I allowed it for today!), juice, and graham crackers for lunch!

I am surprised by the candy in the jersey schools, we were just told in a faculty meeting that it was now a state law no candy and sweets in the classroom (they actually read the list of every disallowed item, it took FOREVER)....

Wow. Well, it is not enforced here! They give it out alot still-I got no notifications or restrictions for DD school either! I think certain items cannot be sold, like soda or candy bars. But they can be given out to a certain degree-I THINK!

Then again, the one public school has a "prayer" at the holiday event. I have so many battles to choose from-I can only pick one or two!
