DH wants to catch the baby!

Im not sure exactly where to put this, but I think its in the right place.

We are TTC now with our 2nd. The first birth was horrible...the typical "your labor is getting too long" pitocin, the epidural and then c section. NOT good, dont EVER want to do that again. So for the next one I want a HB, but DH was absolutle scared to death with all the Docs telling him that we both would have died with out the csection last time. He even knows that its not true and that most all of what went wrong they caused, but we just cant get over how scared he was.

So here is our compromise...he wants to catch the baby. He was taught how (basiclly) in the police academy, and thought "well if Im going to possably do this for a stranger, why not my wife?"

So I guess Im wondering, if you CAN do this in the hospital, and if anyone else has ever done it? Im excited, mostly b/c he actually came up with this idea all by himself...impressed the heck outta me!

At the hospital I gave birth to my DD at, no he would not be "allowed".

Heck, the nurses were freaking b/c my DD was coming out and the doc wasn't responding to his pages and wasn't in the room. They said the doc would be upset if the baby came out before he got there...I was like "too bad" and pushed her out anyways.

At the hospital I gave birth at, DH caught our daughter, and they waited for the cord to stop pulsing before they cut it (per our request).

My DH caught our second child. My MW grabbed his hands and guided him. It obviously depends on your provider, but it was apparently okay to do at that hospital. Def ask when you look for a provider. GL!

Happens all the time at our hospital.

Fear is caused by not being prepared. Why not, since you have plenty of time, research with your DH homebirth. Unassisted birthing sites give more information, I've found, on what happens if something different from "normal" happens (normal is quoted because there are SO many variations of it). In the very least, all that research will help you and your DH be less afraid of a very natual birthing process.

That said, one of the OBs I saw for a short while would have let us catch the baby had we been in the hospital. The hospital's policy was to leave it up to the doctor.

Sure he can! Let the doc know how important it is to you and it shouldn't be a problem. What a great memory for him.

So you are having a VBAC in a hospital? I had a homebirth for my VBAC. I don't think I'd be comfortable giving birth in a hospital, especially not for a VBAC. Like you said they create problems.

I pulled my baby from the water myself, btw

I agree with this! I too had a c-sec in the hospital and then a homebirth with a wonderful midwife. I was too scared that if I went into the hospital the same chain of events that led to my first c-sec would happen again--even though I was way more educated the second time around. I guess for me it was just way more freeing to know that the pit wasn't there, the epidural wasn't there, and I was close enough to the hospital that I felt safe enough at home. I totally second the pp who said to do some hb research together--it may change his mind.

Okay, now that I have said that, I don't know if the hospital will let your DH catch your baby. I do know that for my homebirth the midwife had DH put my hands on the baby to catch him together--even have an amazing pic of his hands on mine catching the baby together. It was an awesome moment!!
