When I took 26 mo old dd to the dentist they said the lateral incisors were already so bad they could not be capped, but would have to be extracted! They said the two front teeth might also have to be extracted. The enamel on the lateral ones is about halfway down the tooth and they seem also to be thinner than they were originally.

I did talk to a mom who has 2 children, age 8 & 5. Both had bad decay when age 2-3. The 8 year old she decided to do nothing for and by the time his 4 front teeth fell out on their own, they were down to "little brown nubs," but his permanent teeth are white and perfect. The other child was complaining of pain so they opted for the surgery. The dentist said he didn't know how bad things would be until the surgery. She got 9 teeth extracted! Scary!

Does anyone else know of someone who got a dire prognosis but decided not to do the dentistry and everything ended up turning out okay with the permanent teeth?

Yes, my son had four teeth that just grew in brown and discolored. I have no idea why. I had a nasty tooth infection when I was pregnant, and he has really really bad allergies, so I am assuming that's what caused it. Anyway, at `14 months I took him in to see a dentist with my crappy university health insurance. They basically ground down his front two teeth and capped them I decided to wait until I had real insurance to do any more work, and took him to see a real dentist (vs. a resident) when he was two. This was for his bicuspids. The dentist basically bonded them and did a few fillings and told me to leave them alone. He is now almost 7, still has his caps and his bicuspids are fine.

I would really strongly urge you to get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion if a dentist tells you to do something drastic. I regret every day getting my son's teeth capped when they probably would have been fine with fillings. The caps DO last, and if they fall out? Well then go back to the dentist and get them recapped! I don't buy this whole caps don't last thing.

Anyway, my 21 month old is starting to have brown spots on her teeth too I am very concerned, but at least I have been through this before so its not AS traumatizing
