Preeclampsia guidelines - search isn't doing what i need ...

So I heard over the weekend that the rules have changed for diagnosing preeclampsia? That swelling isn't even considered a symptom if it's not all over (hands and feet and legs and arms and face)?

When I asked the medical person "when did this change happen" I was told "three years ago" ... just in time for me to have not gone through a fake eclampsia scare and induction if only I'd known :

Anyone heard about this, either directly or through your own research? I was online Friday looking up symptoms and not a single website did *not* list it.

I haven't heard of it.

I hadn't heard that, but I am in nursing school and we were taught it takes 10-15 years for evidence based research to come in to practice. Yikes!

The diagnostic criteria used by perinatologists for PE are threefold:

1)BP >140/90
2)Proteinuria >300mg/24 hours
3)Gestation >20 weeks

Edema isn't considered for the diagnosis, though it can be a warning sign.

HTH!

When I had pre-e I blew up like a balloon (along with a myrad of other symptoms...) but I was told that some people don't swell at all. Either way, I've never heard of it *not* being considered a symptom either.

I don't understand how you could have a fake eclampsia scare? Eclampsia is when your blood pressure is so high that you have a seizure.
