Any Recommendations For Civil War Movies?

Hi-
My son is learning about the Civil War and needs to watch a couple movies on the subject. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Either documentary style or "the big screen" style? I'd like to find ones that are available to rent or borrow from the library.
TIA
Michelle

Totally lurking on your thread. Dd and I are learning about the Civil War as well. We were thinking it would be great if there was a Civil war equivalent of "The Patriot" or something. I am wondering if the Homeschool area would be a good place to cross post. Just a thought.

Hi-
I thought about posting there as well...lol..I spend a lot of time on that board

But there were more viewing the Media forum so figured I would get "quicker" replies. We're hoping to watch them tonight

Heck...I'll go post there right now. The more replies the better

Ken Burns made a civil war documentary called "The Civil War"--go figure . I've never seen it but I enjoyed his series on jazz well enough.

Burns' miniseries was AWESOME!

Red Badge of Courage, The Oldest Living Cofederate Widow Tells All, Gettysburg, North and the South, Blue and the Grey, Gods and Generals, Glory

What's that one with Jodie Foster, it was a re-make of the (awesome)French movie The Return of Martin Guerre

Ok, just looked it up on google . "Sommersby". I think it's pretty good and the whole dress/ feel of the time period is well-done.

Yeah, but it's not about the Civil War per se, more about poor Jodie's loveless, sexless marriage and how that all changes (hoo boy!) when her supposed husband returns...

How about "Glory" or "The Hunley?"

My bro LOVED civil war as a teen; two I remember are The North and the South and Glory. I HEART Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick!!!! Gettysburg was one DB watched too. I guess I blocked most of it out; we had only one TV, and all those videos he had were LONG!!!

oh man, Glory just kills me every time I try to watch it.

I second the Ken Burns series.

nobody said "cold mountain"? had me crying at the end, though. the ken burns series would probably be the most informative and the longest, too.

I've never seen it, but what about Ride with the Devil?

I loved North and South. I had the whole thing taped at one point and watched quite a few times.

I loved Gods and Generals. At first I didnt think I would have the patience since it's so long, but it sucked me in. It doesnt cover the whole war though. Just 3 battles.

The Ken Burns series and Glory.

Part of me wants someone to make a movie of March, but I don't think I could watch it. It is a powerful book.

You actually made it to the end of cold mountain? You're a stronger woman than me.

I (fifth?) Glory. I would watch it with Gone With the Wind though. If you think about it, that film was made just 80 years after the civil war was over, much like a film about WWII (or post-ww2) today.

Another endorsement for Burns' PBS series-you may also enjoy reading Shelby Foote's work (3 volumes worth) together:
