After Baby Ouchies help...

OK well i am certainly not in the best shape of my life!! I don't remember the painful nipples with ds and i guess tearing to the side is much different than being cut down the peri.

My nipples aren't cracked or anything and i think she nurses more than ds did at first. They hurt pretty badly. I kinda dread it when she wantes to suckle cause it hurts when she sucks. I have a small sample of lansinoh and i know i have a small tube of it from ds but have no idea where. She just wants to suckle so much i don't think i have a chance to benefit!! :

With my stitching my left side was the side that needed to be stiched and my right side is completely normal. I sit kinda funny but try to not sit directly on it but sometimes thats impossible. I have some tucks pads that feel great at first since they are cold. I try to put an ice pack between my legs but the pads are so big that i don't really get alot of benefit. I don't have any ice (weird huh...freezers to full!!) I keep saying i should take a cold sitz bath but i feel like i should spend time as a family, or with ds or nursing dd!! :

OK so the sore nipples should be getting better soon right? The swelling from the tear should go down in a few days and at least let me sit like i don't have hemmoriods right?

Anyone else who needs to complain, bitch, or offer ideas post it here!!

Oh sore nipples, I feel your pain. Try putting regular tea bags (liptons) on there when they're nice and warm. The tannins (sp?) in the tea actually take some of the sting out of nursing. This really helped me get through the first two weeks of nursing. Good luck!

Are you sure she is being positioned correctly at the breast & has a proper latch? If you feel like your position is correct & latch is good but it doesn't get better soon or your not sure about latch & position I would suggest contacting your local LLL leader. In the mean time you can try the lansinoh. Also Gerber I think makes some gel pads that you can freeze like ice packs that might help as well. Hope you feel better soon mama.

I really liked the Lansinoh. Most importantly make sure to coat your nipples with colostrum/breastmilk after every feeding and let them air out. That's the best thing for them in terms of health. The Lansinoh just made me feel a bunch more comfy... About the tear, I've made some frozen "peri pads" which are just regular cotton maxi pads, soaked in herbs, and frozen. If you don't have an herbal sitz bath available, just ask someone to wet them with witch hazel, or water would be fine too probably. You just soak it, then I put a piece of wax paper in between, and layered them in a ziplock. Some people put them in aluminum foil. Get a helper to do it for you then you will be all set. Ice packs were my best friend when I tore with DD, along with the peri bottle (do you have one? the little squirt bottle friend to take to the bathroom with you?). Also, a warm sitz bath would feel really, really good on that tear. But maybe you should wait just one more day until some of the swelling has gone down. Hugs mama, you'll feel better soon

Make yourself take time for warm sitz baths -- I know how hard it is w/ all the demands on yr time, believe me, but it really made a difference for me -- I cd tell the difference on days I did & didn't do it. I just did plain warm water, about 4 inches deep in the tub. Also try bags of frozen peas/corn on your crotch; they fit to the shape better. And use a peri bottle EVERY time you use the toilet, that also really made a difference for me. you will feel better soon! I hear ya, though, this part stinks.

lol, me too, doesn't it look hilarious?

I've only used them once, but I think you can use them again but I am not sure. I would want to make sure that they weren't too old, since they could (in theory) grow bacteria, which would be bad for wounded nipples.

I am having a frustrating moment or two as well... we are regressing back into super sore nipple mode ourselves! after a visit with the l.c. and two weeks of pain free nursing. uh. will it ever end! i am really tired of bf at the moment, i feel like a human pacifier and it hurts! uhhhhh.

okay, i am not over, just needed to vent.

Your nipples shouldn't be in that much pain. Newborns often have a bad latch, and it can become a bad habit if you don't fix it! CAll your local LLL Leader or an IBCLC and have them take a gander.

: my right side is pretty bad and i think she latches differently on that side. its red but not bleeding. the left side is doing better and doesn't hurt to nurse her but shes not as "successful" on that side... i also think that some of the problem is nursing at night with no light. plus she gets her hands up near her mouth and tries to latch onto those instead of (or half of) me. i think LLL meets once a month here and its at the beginning of the month. i just need to find their number and be motivated to call etc.

tried a sitz bath while giving dd her first bath and i feel better. the swelling had gone done but the stitch in the odd place is going to be a pain until the knot falls out.

sending dh out for tucks pads and lipton tea bags...if i can boot him out the door...

I totally agree mama with Babs.... nursing can be uncomfortable, but should not hurt.
Get with a LLLL or LC asap. Try a different hold. I found dd latched better with the football hold then with the cradle. Rotate through the different holds at each feeding. Feed on the side that is not as sore first, then on the sore side. Take some acetaminophen (Tylenol) about 1/2 hour before nursing. Also, use some ice packs to help reduce pain before nursing too. Deep breathing and positioning on the breast can make a world of difference. Don't let her suckle until you are satisfied that the latch is the best. It takes learning on her part too. Before you know it, you will both be nursing pros. I had a whole slew of issues with my dd, so my experience is totally personal and I know what it is like to nurse in pain. Lucky for me, my SIL is a LC, so I had hands on help 24/7 or I would have quit. Hang in there

Just wanted to add that sometimes if the baby is nursing fine on one side and not getting a good latch on the other (or one side is much more sore than the other) it may be due to the baby's alignment. A chiropractor visit is a good idea for a newborn to ensure these problems don't happen.

Baby may not want to twist head or even turn head up or down on one side--again, look to alignment...

Also...call the local LLL chapter...here is a number I found (520) 721-2516 Even tho they have monthly meetings...there are always leaders who will do their best to help via phone or even come out to check your latch.
I had MAJOR problems with my dd...and my mom had just gone to buy the formula and bottles when I called the LLL people...they put me in contact with a very good LC who helped me for free on the phone...and who basically helped me emotionally tool...and with her (and LLLs) help, I turned my 'failing to thrive' newborn into a kid who nursed exclusively for 11 mo and then continued until 3! I am SO thankful...and after I got on track I called the LLL people back and asked how I could help, if I could donate $ or something since I was so thankful..she said just come to meetings, so I did...and then I became a member, then a leader! hahaha

Bottom line...call them, they may be able to come and help you...chiro may help too...
I really hope you get to feeling better...nursing is no fun when it hurts!

Oh....and I've heard of taking arnica tablets and rescue remedy as working well for the 'recovery' from stitches...

Lansinoh is wonderful!

As for pain "down there", try a comfrey and sea salt bath! And try taking some Arnica! I also freeze my pads in the freezer and them slip them in my undies. Tucks were great too, and lots of Dermaplast spray!! And a bottle to squirt warm water on there too after every potty!
