strong milk ejection reflex = persistant cough/low weight gain?

I have a very strong milk ejection relex.

DS who is ten months now spat up a lot and coughed but gained very well up until six months.

He has always nursed for shorter periods of time and I only nurse him on one side. I've tried block feeding but it just reduces my supply and does not help with the ejection reflex.

at six months he stopped spitting up as much but coughed often. Wet coughing during the day and he always coughs when he wakes from naps and during the night.

His weight gain really slowed at 6 months.

Saw a GI doc. yesterday expecting him to diagnose GERD. Instead he thinks that the coughing and weight gain are related to the ejection reflex and short nursing sessions. (to his credit he said that he has never and will never tell a woman to stop breastfeeding) He recommeneded seeing a lactation consultant to work on feeding issues.

Any thoughts? I am devestated that nursing has caused so many problems for him. I don't regret nursing him for a second and I know that I have given him more than I have taken away but it is just so heart breaking.

Well, I do know that it's normal for babies to not gain and/or even lose some weight around 6 months. Usually, it's due to baby being mobile.

As for the strong letdown, I would let it catch in a towel and then let him latch on, but by 10 months, I would think he's got it figured out by now.
