Last year, we bought a house and put in a security system. The system was free with a three year contract. When we put the house up for sale, we said the system could be assumed. WHile the house was in escrow, I called the security system company and was told to just make sure that the system was included on the paperwork for the title company. It was. My realtor told me we were signing a paper that stated that everything that was left in the house became the property and responsibility of the new owners. So, we finished out the sale and have continued to be charged for the system. We called and found out that I was lied to (and of course, I cant even find the paper that I wrote down the name of the CSR on, because it was in the middle of a move) and that the new owners would have to fill out paperwork and be approved and so forth. I called the title company and was told that they dont deal with security systems. I talked to my realtor and she said that the form we signed doesnt include the sec system. My realtor talked to the new owners and they dont want the system. They will let us come and get it.
Here is the thing though. We really dont want it now. Our new neighborhood is muc safer, and our phone lines and electrical outlets are really limited so setting up a system is tough here.
The only thing we use the phone line for is our dsl, and that goes out alot. I take online classes and really need a strong line, so I want to let the phone line go and get cable. But, the phone line is needed for the security system.
Does anyone know if I can sell the security system and contract (or give it away to someone who takes over payments?)

Call the security company and ask. How much is left in your contract? Maybe you could settle with them. Make sure you write down the name of the rep that you speak to and don't misplace it! Also get everything in writing.
