need kindergarten transition help

Is there anything I can do? My ds has been at home with me for 5 1/2 years and he just started kindergarten. The first couple of days were great but now he has been crying in the car before I can get him home. I think he is now realizing that this is our new normal and is having trouble with the transition. Can anyone make any suggestions on ways I can help him?
TIA

I made a "hug" for my daughter to take to school in her pocket. I cut 2 layers of felt, added a little stuffing and sewed them together. I added a little tether so I could attach it to her pants but she could still pull it out of her pocket to look at it.

I also included a little drawing in her lunchbox every day--usually a picture of me, daddy, little sister, the cat, etc. Something to remind her of home.

I think these things helped her a lot. She actually told me, after her first day, about something upsetting that had happened, but then she pulled out her hug and felt better.

HTH.

peace, Beth

Sassafras and The Kissing Hand are great books to help with school transitions. I highly recommend them, I saw both of these books work for many over the 10 years I taught school.

Not just THE KISSING HAND. . .

...but POCKET FULL OF KISSES, too. It's the follow-up book and I notice you have a younger sib in the house.

Worked WONDERS for us. Now my DS1 gives ME a kissing hand before I go somewhere!

Also know that this is very common, the thrill wears off and the reality sets in and it can be very scary, but it will all pass quickly!
