As far as I know the only way of avoiding risk of an adverse reaction is to not get the shot.

Here is the link to the manufacturers Package Insert.

contains a trace amount of thimerosal [(mercury derivative), (≤ 0.3 µg mercury/dose)] from the
manufacturing process. Each 0.5 mL dose also contains, by assay, not more than 0.170 mg of aluminum and not more than 100 µg
(0.02%) of residual formaldehyde. The vaccine contains gelatin and polysorbate 80 (Tween-80), which are used in the production of
the pertussis concentrate.

A review by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found evidence for a causal relationship between tetanus toxoid and both brachial
neuritis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.37
• A few cases of demyelinating diseases of the CNS have been reported following some tetanus toxoid-containing vaccines or
tetanus and diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccines, although the IOM concluded that the evidence was inadequate to accept or
reject a causal relationship.

Stephanie Cave recommends vitamin A (I believe in the form of cod liver oil) and vitamin C. Also, don't give any tylenol (acetaminophen) or motrin (ibuprofen) before or after. Those things might increase the risk of a reaction. You might get more replies if this is moved to the selective/delayed forum. Most people who post in this one regularly don't vaccinate at all.

What are your reasons for giving this vax? That's one I wouldn't touch with a 10 ft. pole.

I didn't want to get the "don't vax your kid!" lecture (said not as mean as it sounds, lol, I know you can't always tell tone on the internet). My son is a preemie and we live on a college campus. If he caught Pertussis, he's got a VERY VERY VERY high chance of dying as he is still so tiny. I do not vaccinate him against most things right now. But I am not willing to risk my son's life just because so many people are anti-vax. I have read about it, thought about it, prayed about it and I know this is the right decision for us at this time.

By no means do I think everyone's child needs this! But in our case the possible negative effects of the shot are far less scary than the possible negative effects of him catching pertussis right now.

Oh, and the reason we're waiting until 6 months is because the risk of SIDS decreases so much after that. Since there is correlation between this vax and SIDS I wanted to give him the best chance possible, and I will also be monitering him very closely.

I'll go over to the other board. I didn't know about it. Thanks! I've got Stephanie Caves books, so I was thinking about the vitamins A & C. He already gets C on a daily basis to prevent all the crud that is going around right now.

did your doctors take his prematurity into consideration when scheduling his vaxes?
