Not sure where to put this

But I have a 7 year old boy who has a beer belly, its hard, large and it hangs over everything he wears. He frequently (not daily but often) complains of stomach discomfort and he constantly has gas. He weighs near or around 57-60 pounds and is short in stature about 46 inches. Would you be concerned about this size, shape, and hardness of his stomach? They did a body fat thing at school last year and it stated he had the chance of becoming over weight, he wasnt yet but was well on his way. His face, arms, and legs are normal sized, and do not look over weight but my godess his stomach looks like a 50 year old beer drinkers tummy.

: Not to be alarming, but if it isn't just fat it could be some sort of tumor. Bellies can be hard or soft when it is just fat. It depends on whether the fat is deposited on top of or below the abdominal muscles. What is the weight distribution like for other members of the family? The stomach pain complaints are probably just a result of gas, but who knows? If that is the problem, maybe a change of diet would help. Probiotics maybe?

His ped has never suggested anything. He never comments on his large belly nor does he say anything about his weight. Both of our fathers are short and stalky men and my brother is the same way but when my dad was younger he was very thin (he is all of 5'2" and in 68 he weighed 105 hehe) Caden thinks its the milk he drinks, I was thinking of cutting out the dairy, do you think he might be on to something?

The constant gas would concern me.

I would consider cutting dairy first and go from there. Remember it can take a couple weeks for dairy to completely leave your system, so don't give up right away if there is not a drastic change.

If you are considering trying to alter your family's diet for weight loss (actually maintaining weight rather than losing is recommended for kids), I would suggest looking at info about low-glycemic index foods. Low GI foods keep the blood sugar level at a more even keel so they cause less hunger. Particularly high glycemic foods include pretzels, potatoes, and drinks sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (which I remember reading can cause gas in some). A lot of the "classic" diet foods aren't such a good choice because, even though they are low fat, they are high GI. Candy actually raises your blood sugar level less than pretzels and potatoes! Just knowing what is high GI and low GI is helpful because you can make more low GI foods available at home.

It's possible that he has candida. You could google that and find loads of information.
