Countries that circ?

Ok, we all know that circlist is poo, but I wanted to see how many of the countries they have listed as circumcising are not. http://www.circlist.com/rites/rites.html
How many of you know someone or are someone from one of these countries? Is there any truth to what they are stating is practiced in those countries?

Here is my list:
Albania-my microbiology teacher is from Albania. He asked me about circumcision while I was pregnant with my third and in his class. I told him no, we wont circ, our son is not cut either. He said good, its a disturbing practice. He went on to say that where he is from they do not circ. Maybe one man out of a thousands chooses to get it done as an adult, but they dont do it to kids and he was surprised when he found out they routinely circ babies in this country. Both of his boys are intact, as is he.

Brazil-my freind in high school was an exchange student from Brazil. However, he was an indiginous person, grew up in the jungle. There they never circumcise. I cant really speak for the people in the cities.

The Bris-we all know that many Jewish parents are denouncing this practice, so the opening line is completely untrue.

Canada-the rates they have listed seem very high, but I cant be sure.

Britain-ditto

Japan-we already had this discussion

Mexico-I dont quite understand how if it is such a social status, why then dont immigrants get themselves-or their son's-circ'd? I have only one mexican friend and she has always said that Mexicans dont like circumcision. My first borns bio is Mexican too, born and raised in the US, and I dont think he was cut-I know he didnt bat an eye at our son being intact. We have quite a few hispanics living in our apartment complex, maybe I will ask them too.

Germany-My midwife is German and is a frequent visitor. While I cant say that it hasnt increased in popularity, I know that she has always said that it is never done to babies and very few Germans are circ'd. She left her boys intact and is a big intactivist

Ireland-I'm not sure about this one, but I was under the impression that boys were not routinely circ'd in Ireland

Korea-same thing as Japan...I know MANY Koreans (I have been doing Tae Kwon Do for 12 years now) and while I havent talked to many of them about their penile status, I know two friends who were not cut, I talked to one boys mom about it, she had refused to allow it to happen despite his white dad wanting it done, and the vast majority of Asians that go to my peds office are not circ'd-again, their ped (I think she is Chinese though...I'll have to check) siad that unless you are Muslim, boys and men are never circ'd there. Oh and that when a man has phimosis the treatment is almost always a dorsal slit, not circumcision.

Netherlands-can I say barf? "Although our two sons were cut (phimosis) shortly after birth." Are you kidding me?!? In a country with such low circ rates? Bleck!

Thats all I can attest to-I havent ever been outside the US.

Looking through the new pages, I managed to get to "See Malaysian Mass-Circumcisions on Your Next Vacation" before I had too much. Yuck.

Scotland - Doesn't seem to be common practice. I know all four of my uncles and all of my male cousins are intact. We even talked about it when I went to visit in May.

My husband is from Brazil and his whole family is intact.

The circumcision rate in Canada was 13.9% in 2003. http://www.courtchallenge.com/refs/yr99p-e.html

England - Absolute BS in infancy - *no one* does it. If you're (non-religiously) cut in England it was probably done in toddlerhood because you had "phimosis" or you were ballooning. Out of everyone I've encountered there, I've known 3 people cut - one for the foreskin "sealing shut" (this conclusion was drawn probably because of ballooning and trickling of urine) at 18 months, one for phimosis at the same age, and one has NO CLUE and doesn't want to ask his parents.

England - Born before 1950 (or so) - probably cut. After 1950 (or so) most likely intact.

That's what I heard.

South Korea has the highest circumcision rate of any country in the world, which is due entirely to American influence during the Korean War. Circumcision was unheard of before then but now it is almost universal there.

The difference between America and South Korea is that circumcision is usually done in late childhood.

Wow, that is so interesting! I totally hadnt heard that....I wonder why all the people I have spoken to about circing that are from Korea have acted like I was nuts and told me that no one circ's. Maybe its just because of the area I am in....(near seattle)
