Life Insurance, Wills, Living Wills, Etc.

So, we don't have a lot of money. But DH and I REALLY need to get on this. We have no wills, no life insurance, nothing. I am worried that he will die and leave me alone with three little ones. I don't want to have to go back to work right away if that happened.

I know I can get a will from an attn., but that seems so expensive. What programs have people used to make their own?

Where does one buy life insurance from? How much does it cost? How do you figure out how much life insurance you need?

It's really pathetic that we've been married for so many years now and have never taken care of this. Totally irresponsible, too! Thanks for advice!

What state do you live in?

You don't have to do it all at once, and an attorney should be willing to do it in pieces for you. I had some clients who knew they needed all that stuff, but couldn't afford it all at once. So, we figured out what was most important and we did that first. For them, it was having a guardian nominated for the daugther. So, I did an emergency standby guardian proxy for them.

When they were ready, the called and said they were ready to do the wills. A little later we'll set up a trust for the daughter.

I'm not sure about the life insurance, but if your friends have LI, you could ask them who their broker is, and get some quotes from them for different options. Again, let that person know what your concerns are, what debts there would be, etc. so they can figure out what you need and not just try to sell you a huge policy you can't afford.

If there is a law school near you, you could see if they do any type of clinic where you can go get those things done.

I wish I could have a will made up but I simply can not afford a lawyer. Not even a clinic...Unless it was free.
I don't own anything of worth but I'm sure there is more to wills than monetary stuff, right?
